05/16/21: I ordered a handful of things at Chou Quon to try out. It’s been a few years since I’ve been and wanted to get a sampling. The staff speak Chinese and English. I forgot that some of the ladies speak Vietnamese, which would of helped me. Lol The line that afternoon was probably 10 people deep and with Covid-19 happening, it extended out the door with social distancing.
They have a really good selection of buns(savory, sweet), cakes, sweets, and dim sum items. This location doesn’t have all the dim sum, particularly the hot items, on display or have them listed on the menu board in English. I totally forgot what dim sum they made. I just lucky and saw/heard someone else order some dim sum (shu mai, har gow) ahead of me. I was totally wanted some of that. I ended ordering 2 bbq pork buns, 1 fried taro dumpling (wu gok), 1 fried glutinous rice pork dumpling (ham sui gok), 1 sponge cake, 1 sesame ball with red bean paste, 1 order of shu mai (pork and shrimp dumplings), 1 order of har gow (crystal shrimp dumplings). The woman getting my order seemed to be not in the best mood and kind of annoyed. Instead of har gow, she gave me 2 orders of shu mai. They only do cash and my total was under $20 for sure.
Everything we got was ranging from pretty ok to really good. We really like the sponge cake. It was light and not too sweet. My least favorite was the sesame ball. It was really doughy. Maybe it would of been better eating it right away instead of the next day.
Overall, Chiu Quon is a pretty good spot to get your Chinese baked goods and dim sum to go. It’s not SF Chinatown quality, but it’s...
Read more1000% recommend! I honestly got frustrated because I've passed it so many times without going in, and now I know that I could've avoided the disappointing versions of buns and pastries? Upsetting.
There are both savory and sweet options alike, absolutely everything is delicious. I ordered a pork cabbage steamed bun, pork and shrimp ball, custard bun, egg tart, almond cookie, and pineapple pie. Better than some of the places I've back home. This is not the place to be concerned about nutritional value.
The cabbage bun was wonderfully fluffy, and rather than chunks of oversalted pork, it's all well incorporated with very flavorful cabbage. The biggest surprise was the pork and shrimp ball - I was curious and decided to try it. It's a sweet rice cake with a savory filling, and it works so well.
Custard bun was evenly filled, with no excessive air pockets. Literally every bite had custard, and the caramelized top was flaky and soft. The egg tart's center was so soft that I half expected it to completely run out of the crust. It has a great soft texture and is ginormous.
Note, they're cash only!! But I will be bringing everyone I know in so they're able to expetience...
Read moreI have a very negative experience with this bakery. I remember from the past that the owner, this chinese lady used to put sneaky extra cakes into my purchase bag to charge me more. Today, knowing about this tricks from the owner I carefully counted what she put into my bag. But guess what she did this time? I bought a plate of steamed rice with chinese sausages and this Chinese lady sneaky changed the fresh, soft steamed rice on a very old dried one. I found out it when I came home. I remember checking out this rice while it was on the top of the shelf and it was soft and fresh. But the rice she put into my plastic bag was so old, dried and hardened I couldn't eat it at all. Also I noticed that the filling in the custard buns became bland and it's amount decreased drastically. You will get a thick layer of dough and small amount of filling. You can not change the mentality of a con artist or dishonest person. It's like a persistent habit, a disease. Probably this dirty seller even is unaware that she is destroying her own business by cheating on customers. If she is so stupid let's her continue to make suicidal attempts to her bakery. Avoid this dishonest bakery...
