A family's experience at Fernando's, direct post from Facebook...
My husband and my two kids ages 7 and 4 went to a place called Fernando’s on Lincoln Ave in Chicago to have dinner. Inside the restaurant there is nothing but Caucasians, we are not and they were all being well tended to while we waited several minutes to be seated with nobody else waiting! The older lady who turns out was the owner was working as the host and after making us wait for 20 mins with NOBODY else waiting for a table, basically told me to grab my menu’s, crayons for my kids and kid menus and she took us to our table for four, a very small table and went back to her chair in the front of the restaurant to sit. I didn’t say anything because she was probably about 60 years old and was probably tired from a long day. When we got to our table we ordered drinks and appetizers and our main course. Well long story short our daughter wanted a sip of my husbands soda, well there was 4 of us sitting at this tiny table and there were several plates on the table by the time the main courses came. When she got the glass she took a sip and then went to put it down there was some silverware there and it was unbalanced and subsequently it spilled right into my plate of food that I barely touched. We asked the waiter for another plate and he said okay and didn’t come back to 15 minutes and seemed to be avoiding us. Then he came and said it would take too long and we said that’s okay and he went away and came back again after another 15 minutes and said he would have to charge us for another plate and my husband said it was an accident and he said okay and left again and didn’t come back for another 10 minutes and then he finally said we would have to pay for another plate. Sooo he basically gave us the run around for 45 minutes meanwhile I have not eaten but a few bites! We asked for the bill angry and disappointed and my husband asked for the manager who is the elderly lady. So my husband who is very reasonable tells her that its good customer service to replace my plate, you want to treat customers right and he tells her we won’t come back and she said GOOD! Then he says why is that good, we are customers how can you not want us to come back? Meanwhile, some other people (white people) were leaving and my husband says to them “Hey don’t come back here this is the worst service I’ve ever gotten!” The guy in the group says, “Good we don’t need your kind around here!” . My husband was LIVID! He asked the guy what does that mean??? And the guy said I’m not going to fight you and if you come by me I’m calling the police, so I had to grab my husband because you know my kids were there and leave. The owner picked up the phone and told my husband she was calling the police because she doesn’t want “ghetto” people in her restaurant! Ghetto? Really? We just dropped $70 on a meal and...
Read moreIf you're looking for a Mexican restaurant THIS IS NOT THE PLACE!!!!! First time there and will never return. My friends and I were looking to try a new Mexican restaurant, and boy did we pick the wrong place. Our experience was horrible from the beginning! First of all, we were served drinks that were watered down. One of my friends told the waiter that her slushy margarita was pure water, and asked to switch out her drink for another. The waiter took the drink to the bar and appeared 5 minutes later (without the original drink - or a replacement drink) to tell her if she wanted a new drink she would have to pay for the one she did not drink. So now even if my friend decided to keep the horrible drink she couldn't because the bartender had dumped it.
At that point we asked to speak to the Manager. About 10 minutes later a guy appeared from the kitchen and told us his name is "Manny" and that he is the manager. His first words were "what did you want???" It went downhill from there. When we explained to him what had happened he decided to argue with us and tell us that we don't know what we are saying and that no one has complained in 34 years and that we should know that a frozen margarita tastes like ice!!!...Really Manny? Have you read your negative reviews???? I was trying to explain to him that this is not the way to treat a customer, but he was not going to have it, he kept repeating the same thing over and over. Not once did he say, "How can I make this right for you?" which would have been appropriate. Manny is a horrible manager who needs to go to restaurant management class. Owner of Fernando's, if you are reading this, maybe you need to listen to all the negative reviews; this is exactly why you are only a 3 star restaurant. If you really want people to enjoy your establishment, my advice to you is to train your waitstaff and especially train the" manager". There are hundreds of Mexican establishments in the city, yours is one me and my friends will NOT be visiting again.
The worst part of it all, we paid $32.00 for one sip of 4 watered down drinks. Disgusting, unacceptable, actually just outrageous! It feels like we were completely ripped off. Save your hard-earned money, don't throw it away...
Read moreThis restaurant caught my attention so me and my friend went here. The waitress came and took our order, she seemed new as she didn't seem to know the menu too well. We ordered our food and an appetizer. Took a while to get our drinks which were a soda and a pina colada- the place was not busy at this time so no reason for delay. Then after a long a time we didn't get chips which were at other tables- not sure if everybody gets chips or not but we had ordered guacamole. We are Mexican while 90 percent of the other customers were Caucasian so i feel as this had something to do with the bad service. I asked the waitress if we could get chips and she brought out our guacamole with chips. Not sure if she forgot we had ordered this until I asked her for it or if it was just bad service overall. She brought our dinner and I asked if we could get hot sauce when she brought cholula I knew then and there I would not be returning back here. I looked at her and said you don't have salsa? She said she would bring the house salsa. I had fish tacos which had no flavor, the salsa helped along with some salt but would not order them again. The rice and beans were good. My friend ordered asada well done and it was a bit pink but they ate it anyway, they enjoyed the food but didn't like that the house salsa was warm. I will not return to this restaurant and do not recommend it. If you want Mexican food with some flavor and great service this is...
