I remember walking out of the Southport L station one evening and seeing a line of about 150 people eagerly waiting outside of Jeni's. At first, I didn't know what it was for. Later I discovered they they were giving away a couple of free scoops of ice cream. Believe me, I'm a master at waiting in lines (3 hours to see Ingrid Michaelson live, 5 hours to see Meryl Streep speak, but sadly no cronut line success as of yet), but I don't even think I (at that point) would have waited at least 2 hours for 2 scoops of ice cream. However, after tasting it, I take that all back.
I discovered the best time to go to Jeni's anytime during the first three months after it opened was Monday at 3 PM. Literally. Everyone was at work, and I luckily had the day off and took advantage of the lack of wait at Jeni's. Since it was during their winter season of ice creams, we got a scoop of the limited edition rhubarb ice cream and one of their signature sorbets, the Riesling Poached Pear Sorbet.
Now, call me an alcoholic but mannn, that Riesling Pear Sorbet was the most delicious thing I have ever tried. It was the perfect texture, crisp, balanced, and I was hoping for more after I had finished it. My friend couldn't even believe how delicious it was. Would it be appropriate if I pre-gamed with it? Gosh, I hope so.
The rhubard was also reallyyyy good. Their ice creams are pretty thick and creamy, so this isn't some of your regular Blue Bell for all my Texans out there. But this is probably some of the best ice cream I've ever had. You can taste the actual ingredients and they are all so fresh. We had a few others as well (of whose names I can't remember, I was probably tips off of the Riesling Pear Sorbet), and they were all wonderful.
Also, the customer service is great here. Everyone behind the counter is so nice and personable, and you can legit try as many flavors as you want. They even encourage you to try a lot of them until you find the ones you love. My main advice: don't skimp on...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreHadn't had Jenny's ice cream in a while so I wanted to treat myself. My male server yesterday afternoon was by himself and literally there weren't a lot of people here just one young lady ahead of me trying to figure out what she wanted and me.
She finally picked her flavors and since I already knew what I wanted I picked a small sugar cone size with wild lavender and the other scoop a dark chocolate š«
Unfortunately he gave me extremely tiny portions of both and the wild lavender š on top was lopsided in a few minutes so I had to prop it back up myself or it would have fallen.
I'm not sure if this location only gives way smaller portions than the West Loop but it's the tiniest 2 scoops I ever paid for over $8 plus tip.
Another young lady came in right after my order and the server was extremely nice and friendly to her apparently he barely "went through the motions" taking my order.
He looked pretty bored honestly but literally I'm not sure why my scoops were so tiny. I didn't even think to take a photo š it was so embarrassingly small and not worth the price I paid. It makes me wonder if the store manager at this location is guiding their employees here to portion out much smaller servings to the guests or if the server just didn't know from lack of experience.
It was a...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreI had Jeni's for the first time on a trip to Ohio and now I am on a mission to try every location in Chicago. This location is super close to the CTA stops so that's always a plus. I honestly get the same flavor every time I come (the vegan coconut dark chocolate) and it's so worth it. They really know how to make some darn good vegan ice cream here. I do wish they would branch out into more vegan options but at the very least it is always nice to be able to have ONE option. That is the only reason for 4 stars rather than 5 They also let you have unlimited samples on METAL spoons (hellooo environmentally focused and friendly) Everything in the store is nicely and neatly labeled while also maintaining the "cute" aesthetic that this neighborhood is known for. On a typical day, you can grab some ice cream, take a nice stroll and do a little shopping all in one area. Also lots of dogs in the area. They also have pints that you can buy on the go and if you buy enough they'll give you a "keep cool" bag to go along with it. 4/5 would return again to this location or any...
