FOLLOW-UP: I want to be fair and share that the owner of Mimi’s personally reached out to me by both email and phone regarding my recent experience. She was extremely apologetic, and it was clear how sincerely upset she was about what had happened.
I also learned that they took immediate action by holding an emergency staff meeting and terminating the server responsible for the unacceptable behavior.
Given how seriously they handled this, my family and I will absolutely return to Mimi’s—especially since my son has always been a big fan of the place.
Thank you to Mary and her team for showing how much pride they take in their business and for going above and beyond to make things right.
The single worst customer service experience I have ever had — anywhere.
My family & I stopped at Mimi’s on Lincoln this past weekend and were met with service so unbelievably rude it left me stunned. The server at the window acted as though taking our order was a burden. I asked for scrambled eggs and a bagel — two basic items they clearly serve — and instead of simply entering the order, he snapped, “this isn’t a diner, most people stick to the menu.” The arrogance was astounding.
Then my son asked for a matcha latte, and the server literally just stared at him in silence before sneering, “Do you want to tell me if you want that hot or cold, and with or without sugar?” The tone was dripping with hostility — it felt less like ordering at a café and more like being mocked.
This wasn’t “bad service.” It was open contempt for customers. The treatment we received was beyond rude — it was insulting. After several more condescending remarks, we left. Across the street at Botanical Café, we were welcomed instantly, treated with respect, and given the kind of basic courtesy every paying guest deserves. The contrast was night and day.
Let’s be clear: this is not just a bad employee — it’s a failure of management. Any business that allows someone this hostile to be the face of their restaurant is sending the message that they do not care about their customers. Mimi’s should be embarrassed to have this server as the face of the establisment.
Avoid Mimi’s at all costs. Until they replace staff, retrain leadership, and remember the meaning of hospitality, this place will remain a disgrace to Chicago’s...

Ordered a bagel sandwich and smoothie for $30. Sandwich was alright, the smoothie was not very good though. Despite having strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, and Greek yogurt (all pretty overpowering smoothie flavors in my experience) the drink only tasted like thick almond milk. Could hardly taste the fruit at all.
Also, I waited for my order in the back on a couch right in front of a table that had clearly just been spray painted recently because I could smell the spray paint fumes pretty strongly.
I live right by this place so I was hoping to have a new spot for mornings I’m too lazy to cook breakfast, but I don’t see myself going back when this is what...
Read moreAnother wonderful Chicago coffee shop! If you want to get some work done, catch up with a friend, or take something to to, this is a great place. Especially if you or friends are vegan, vegetarian, or gluten-free!
I had the salted maple latte which was delicious and not too sweet. The OG bagel sandwich was amazing. It was fairly empty but there were a few busy rushes and yet the barista (who was on her own) had the multiple drinks out quickly.
There are outlets all along the walls and plenty of different seating options. The WiFi was consistent and easy to join (password is on the wall). Clean, easygoing music, and some natural light from the windows. Definitely...
