As it was a grey & rainy day & my two friends & I were seeking a spot for dinner, it seemed both fortuitous & fitting to find we were within a stone’s throw of Mrs. Murphy & Sons Irish Bistro. It had been a long time since I’d last been, so the ample entry corridor brought extra delight with all the Irish foods (& peat!) on offer. Immediately hearing a trad sesh going on in the main bar brought certain joy to my heart; I was practically jigging all the way to our table. I’ve always been partial to the gorgeous woodwork & authentic decoration in this public house, it keenly hearkens back to the aesthetic of the pubs actually in Ireland.
The atmosphere was a toasty, cozy contrast to the deluge outdoors & it beautifully complimented our fish & chips, Irish Breakfast, potato leek soup & pints of Guinness & Magner’s. By all accounts the food was superb; I even robbed some Brown Bread from one of my mates & have zero regrets. I’m very much looking forward to my next visit when I bring an extra shopping bag for more tasty imported goodies (I purchased Milk Chocolate Hobnobs & McVities’ Dark Chocolate Digestives this go ‘round) & maybe grab a Mrs. Murphy & Sons shirt! Go raibh maith agat for the great craic! See you...
Read moreOne of the worst sports bar experiences I've ever had. They call themselves a Liverpool bar, and last game of the season started at 1030am. Any other soccer bar opens hours before kickoff, TVs set up, schedule discussed with staff, etc. We walk in and there is one bar staff member, no TVs even on. When we ask for the game to be put on (it had already started), she hands us a basket full of remotes and tells us to set it up for her. After 20 minutes of the worst set up process, we finally get the game on the TVs FOR THEM. We missed 2 goals during this process. When the bar-designated techy staff worker finally came in for his shift, he proceeded to whine about how we kept asking for help with the TV (we asked for subtitles to be turned off as it blocked a portion of the field). He then turned and yelled at his coworker about how annoyed he was to do his job lol. All the drinks came out super late, when they only had 3 tables in the whole place to serve. One of the worst experiences ever, could not wait to get out so we could spend money with deserving businesses. Please avoid...
Read moreI really appreciated the idea of having an upscale place to get some good ole Irish food. Generally if you want Irish food, it's the usual fish n' chips, or reuben sandwich deal at an Irish bar. However, this place is the real deal. I just am not necessarily sure that the execution did it justice.
The restaurant itself is very nice. It's dark with lots of candlelight, and has a romantic element that I liked. The service was absolutely fantastic, very friendly, helpful and just overall pleasant. The food on the other hand left us a little disappointed.
I had the Guinness stew and it just didn't taste like much more than a denty moore canned beef stew. My boyfriend had a shepards pie and his complaint was that the flavors were rather bland. I'm hoping this was just an off night because we really love Irish food and there aren't enough places that we can go for good, authentic soda bread and the rest. If we come across some fantastic deal for here, we'll probably give it another shot; otherwise I'll still be on the lookout for...
