I'm updating my review to 1 star after seeing the owner's misleading reply. I find it disingenuous to deny the recent departure of 2 long-term managers - facts I'm quite familiar with. The claim about having an 18-year veteran chef is particularly ironic given your more recent acquisition of the restaurant. Instead of deflecting criticism, I suggest focusing on addressing your staffing issues and learning to accept feedback gracefully.
Original Review: I've been going to The Globe for 7ish years - since before they split into two spots and the Eagle Bar opened next door. Back in the day, this place was awesome. You'd walk in and someone would be right there to greet you, the servers were super friendly, and there was an amazing manager who would always stop by just to check how everything was going. The whole staff worked together to make sure everyone was having a good time.
However, the last ~5 months have been rough. Sure, they spruced the place up a bit - got some new bar stools, finally fixed that wobbly bench on the wall, did some work on the TVs and such. But along with all that came some price hikes, and worse, all our favorite people left - the awesome servers, our go-to bartender, and that great manager (there is one server who’s been there since the beginning and she’s awesome, but I hardly see her anymore).
These days, the service is just... yikes. There's this one newer server who literally moves like they're underwater and completely blanks us out when we try to get their attention. The last straw was about 2 months ago when my friend and I went in on a slow, mostly empty Saturday night. We sat at a table for a solid 20 minutes (not even exaggerating) trying to catch someone's eye while four different employees ignored us. We ended up bailing and going to Mrs. Murphy's & Sons instead. Funny enough, the bartender over there told us they only ever need two people behind the bar, even on their busiest nights, and they manage just fine.
It really bums me out because I live right in the neighborhood and The Globe used to be my spot. They've got some serious issues to work out before I'll go back.
FOOD REVIEW: I'm attaching some photos of the food I've had there in the past. Their Monte Cristo is my go-to order and favorite menu item (but it only comes with orange slices instead of fries AND they increased the price by $2). They have a variety of fries, all of which are amazing (I’ll admit that was one of the positive changes they’ve made - the curly fries are now regularly in stock as of March 2024). All of their wraps are delicious! I’d skip the mac n cheese, it...
Read moreA dark and comfortable pub with great service. What more could a Chicago based Irish descendent want? Well, I guess the Irish in me should have some ire towards the English nature of the pub, but seriously, who can pass up a good pub?
The service I received at this bar was fantastic, friendly and fast. I had no trouble finding a seat at the bar (this place is huge), and did not wait long for my first drink (or any of the following drinks).
I didn't try the food because I had already ate. It looked very British but what I saw other people eating looked delicious and was tempted to have second dinner.
My bartender was quick with a recommendation of an Oktoberfest when I asked for her recommendation, although the beer felt like it was served room temperature. Then again maybe this beer is supposed to be served that way. My multiple Guinnesses on the other hand were perfect and you could tell the bartenders put time & effort into the pours to get them just right.
The only thing that felt off about this pub was its music selection, but I not so secretly think that the music doesn't fit the atmosphere because the owners want you to pay for Touch Tunes.
The only other tip I have about this bar is you may want to check the soccer schedule - if there's a game of any significance anywhere in the world, I suspect it will be on T.V. here, and possibly even with the sound on. Something I'm not that interested in, but others probably are.
So, plusses: Atmosphere & service. Cons: Soccer and music.
In my NCAA style bracket to find the best bar in Chicago -"The Chicago Bar Bracket" - The Globe Pub narrowly beat out Quenchers Saloon. You can read more about the matchup by clicking on my profile and checking out my site.
The Globe is definitely a good bar and one that you'd want in your neighborhood, but we'll have to wait and see if it stacks up as one of the best...
Read morewent here after a meeting in the area. I wasnt too thrilled. The service was rather slow, and I was there on a Wednesday night, with no big games on. The waitress seemed rather on edge, but I think that might have been us, since we gave her our order really quickly. She got everything right though, to be fair and the food came out relatively quickly.
My faves for the evening were the jalapeno poppers- they were stuffed with an incredible cream cheese and were bacon wrapped. Definitely will re-order that. The artichoke dip lacked a little salt, but was well made and had a good texture. The goat cheese bruschetta was a little disappointing to be honest, and didn't have the punch I thought it would. Also the bread wasn't really toasted/baked, which was weird. The Mac and cheese was cheesy and mac-y but a little forgettable. I had the globe burger, which was A-OK. comes with a side of fries- not necessarily the greatest. I also had the flirtini - I liked that it wasn't uber sweet, but it wasn't well mixed according to me, the flavors changed as the drink progressed and it had a bitter taste to the end (maybe it was the maraschino cherry?) The alcohol is a little odd - they have beer, wine and martinis, but no other cocktails or well drinks.
The ambiance was just another sports bar- lots of wood and a number of screens. Good to watch a game cos there wasn't a place in the bar where you wouldn't be able to...
