What’s Fun to Do During Christmas in July in Cleveland?
Grace MuniakGrace Muniak
update: Management called and worked to remedy the situation. The event fee was refunded. In the past, I've had good experiences at this place! Tonight was another story. My group paid about $60 to reserve a table at the Christmas bar. The ad was clear: we sanitize tables in between groups, we limit the amount of people in the room to allow for social distancing, etc. The ordinance is clear, you wear masks when you're not eating or drinking, or your bar gets shut down. We felt comfortable making this move. Tonight, my group of 6 all left very disappointed. There were many, and I mean MANY people that let in without paying for tables, or that they had room for. This is the first concern, more people than capacity allowed. Secondly, the table next to us seemed to think masks were an option at bars, and management did absolutely nothing about this. The manager at multiple points in the night joined their table and chatted with the group, and watched them roam throughout the bar without realizing these people are the reason his bar could lose 24 hrs of revenue. The people in this group were not the only ones who did not wear masks, many people wandering around the bar and going to the restroom were not wearing masks either. Those in my group did try to remind the other patrons that masks were necessary, but obviously unsuccessfully. I had a conversation with the manager at the end of the night where I expressed my concerns. He told me, and I quote, "you should have told us sooner," implying that this was my fault that they did not properly control their bar. I repeatedly told the man that it was not my responsibility, that I was there to enjoy my night, and his job was to ensure that I got my money's worth at his Christmas bar. He told me security was walking around telling people to sit down and wear masks, however (and I'm sure his video footage from the night would prove) there was not a moment in time where security was in the room asking anyone to put on a mask. The only people concerned about the safety of patrons were the patrons, and as I mentioned earlier, that is not our responsibility. The manager was unapologetic, and when we came to a stalemate I challenged him to do something. Do something now. On my way out he apologized to me, and I mentioned sarcastically how I was sure he was sorry. He had done nothing. The bartenders were wonderful (at least they wore masks!), and our drinks were good. But please, I am begging you, do not pay your way into this bar. Do not believe that they care about your safety. If you are interested in going, simply slide into the Christmas bar after the fun has started. No one will stop you and the drinks are good. But know what you are getting into. Shame on the management. I work in Human Resources and my job is to keep my employees safe. I felt robbed and disrespected tonight Edit: I added a screenshot of the eventbrite ad where it addresses the steps that they are taking to "ensure the health and safety of all who stop by to visit."

A hidden gem in Cleveland. On the border of Rocky River and the much trendier Lakewood, Around the Corner is literally difficult to spot from the road. It's a very casual bar. Pretty much anything goes here, which keeps it from getting too pretentious. There is dancing with a DJ in a dedicated warehouse area every Friday and Saturday, and the tunes are actually danceable and supported by a fairly impressive sound, light, and fog show. Hermit crab races typically start at 11 and are a lot more fun after a few drinks. You can win coupons, shirts, and other random assorted swag from the free races. The patio area is great in the summer, where there is room to play cornhole or watch the game on TVs. That's part of what brings in the diverse crowd - it's not a sports bar, not a dance club, and not a typical neighborhood bar, but it combines the best elements of each. Drinks are very reasonably priced and the food provides pretty good value. 2.50 summer beers occasionally happen. Sure, it's not as trendy as the flats but this is legitimately a great place for groups because of the large amount of space, variety in activity, and 3 bars with attentive bartenders. I'll be back.

EXTREMELY RUDE STAFF! We utilized the back room for a private party. When the space opened up to the public around 10, the bouncers came over and hustled my mother, grandmother and aunts from the table they were still sitting at, without so much as a warning, leaving them to juggle the leftover cake, decorations, and coats as we fumbled for another place to set everything. At the end of the night the bouncers began cussing at the bar patrons to "get the f@$& out" as soon as the lights came on. We made our way to the door, and I held back as it was -7 out and my Uber was 2 minutes away. When the bouncer began telling me to leave I told him, "hey buddy we just spent like $600 in your party room and my über is 2 minutes away, just give me a minute." A female employee who was sitting there, doing exactly what I'm not sure said to me, "that's unfortunate." Yes, I guess it is unfortunate we chose this venue to spend our money only to be treated so rudely. Bar staff who swear at their patrons, the people who have spent their hard-earned money contributing to these peoples' paychecks, are a negative reflection on the management and ownership of this establishment. As someone who manages people in a customer service capacity, I would never tolerate my employees treating my patrons like this regardless of the situation. Next time, whether it's an event or just a night out, I'll plan on going to a bar where the staff is a little more nice and a...
