I have Blackbird for breakfast far more often than I probably should -- to the point where everybody there knows my order.
My absolute favorite are their tomato and mozzarella foccacias, followed by their chocolate/raspberry crossiants.
I've never found a place that is so caring and wholesome as this bakery. When I came in on a Friday aiming for a chocolate crossiant, at a time I knew may be too late, I was met with them being out of stock with them and all of my back up options. My plan was to try somewhere else to get breakfast and lunch and just grab my drink there. HOWEVER, the staff there knows me so well that I was met at the door with my favorite foccacia fresh out of the oven. That's the kind of kindness that keeps the world moving.
I don't go there almost every day because I have to, I go there because it's excellent quality and the staff are so friendly. I'm often quite shy in the mornings, but if any of you are reading this you are all lovely and I appreciate the work you do. I find that we can lose a sense of fulfillment in our jobs, so I hope you all know that you're the best part of my mornings and that carries me through work. Many can't function without their coffee, but you make it a fun treat.
If you haven't been here, or are visiting, try this gem of a bakery. Get there earlier if you want the fullest menu option, and don't bother on weekends unless you are the first in line. I'll be back...
Read moreStopped in for a quick bite & a drink. My chai latte & biscuit with orange marmalade were delicious. My only issue was that there was a distinct lack of cleanliness in the cafe seating area. At one point, the garbage was overflowing & a worker came out to chat with a customer (presumably a regular or friend); the worker saw the garbage & before returning into the coffee prep area, she used her bare hand to push down the garbage. Hopefully, she washed well after that!
Their jellies are in a tray at a self-serve counter with cup lids, napkins, & coffee add-ins. I was going to use the last orange marmalade in the tray, but found that it was firmly stuck to the tray by a layer of other by-gone jams/jellies. I asked one of the workers if they had any more & showed how it was stuck. Rather than taking the tray & cleaning/refilling it, he just handed me a couple fresh packets & went about his day.
Lastly, every table was visibly not clean; I wiped my own down, but observed that there were several workers in the coffee prep area doing random things for single orders. Surely, one could be spare to tidy up. Being from a family who owned a diner & having grown up working in that environment, I'm well aware of the level of effort needed for this.
Will definitely be taking my drink & baked good to go next time. They are well worth a...
