The Breadsmith is a like one of those old fashioned bakeries that you see in the movies. They make the bread as it used to be back then also. They don't put in filler junk like the comercial bakeries do and you can tell by the taste. I remember places like this that my grandmother took me to decades ago. Today I got french peasant bread and hot crossed buns. Let me just say that my family devoured them when I got home. The raisins in the bun were so plump and delicious with the light cinnamon taste and smell that the bread melted in my mouth. The fragrance of the bread told my mouth what joy awaits my tounge. I wanted more but the box was empty. So I through a piece of french peasant bread in the toaster. Just opening the bag and smelling the aroma took me back to 1976 to a place in Ostend Belgium by the sea that I bought a small loaf of bread from to go with some cheese and wine and share with a new friend. I had forgotten that night till now. The semi sturdy bread with soft cracked wheat berries was excellent with just butter but the jelly made it so good. I put some of my home made orange marmalade on it and the second desert was at hand. They bake different bread every day at the Breadsmith. They have a schedule you can get online so you can plan on a favorite. I just show up and...
Read moreThey left me high and dry on Thanksgiving: I ordered a large bread/rolls order for Thanksgiving one week in advance to the holiday (nearly $100 worth of bread). An employee from Breadsmith called me today (Wednesday–11/22–the day before Thanksgiving) to let me know due to a system error, they cannot fill my order (not even partially). Now I am scrambling to find the large amount of rolls and bread amongst other stores in Lakewood before our family dinner.
Additionally, they wanted me to return to the store for a refund, which I said no–since I paid via phone, they could refund my card over the phone. The owner called me back, gave me my refund, and had no excuse/info regarding the error. I stated I was a loyal customer (at least 2-3x a month visit for nearly 20 years), and I asked if they could do something, even a small gesture, to make it right by me. They refused stating: "We are small artisan bakery and these things happen."
It's very upsetting as they are our favorite bakery in Lakewood, and we love supporting small business, but I feel so slighted as they really put me in a lurch, and added additional holiday stress at the last minute without really offering to...
Read moreYou'd be hard pressed to find a better bread shop in Lakewood. I've been going to Breadsmith for years now, and while the bread is more expensive, it's worth the price point. My husband, daughter and I go ever single week and have become obsessed with the English Muffin Bread (on Sundays only), the Onion Rye, Tuscan Herb, and the Granola Bread. In addition to tasty loaves of love, they dish up some desserts (the chocolate brownies are out of this world and you get a lot of bang for your buck) and pastries. I bring cinnamon rolls to my family in New York every time I visit because they all love them. And when my family visits me in Lakewood, they always stop at Breadsmith and take some pastries and loaves of bread home back to New York. Hands down, this...
