I need to preface this with 99.9% of the time I do not give a 5-star review to a place based off a first and one time visit, but, that being said, this place deserves it!
Tripadvisor very rarely leads me astray, especially when it comes to small town joints, but finding this place when looking for someplace good to grab a filling meal after a pretty challenging hike in Colorado Bend was like hitting the jackpot!
First, this place is right smack in the middle of the town square. Second, it is German meets quirk, meets small town dry humor for its decor and I loved everything about it! Third, you know this is where the legit locals call home. When we walked in, it had a smattering of townfolk and that right there is usually a solid sign an eating establishment is non-touristy for real food.
This joint is as real as it gets for German food. I am not a big German cuisine person because it tends to be very pork heavy and I usually do not eat pork (outside of bacon). But, if you want what I can only assume is the authentic german culinary experience, you have hit the bullseye!
I love a place that brings me citrus w/my water and this place was already on a 5-star trajectory when our lovely server brought us huge glasses of water (we were soooo thirsty!) with limes! She was also fantastic at recommending anything and everything! I am pretty well versed in beer, so when she steered me towards a Paulaner Hefe instead of a Doppelbock, I had my doubts, but w/the hefe being on draught and the Db being in a btl, I let the dice roll. It was such a solid call! They serve the Hefe w/a slice of orange (in the actual correct glassware to boot!) and Steph(f?)anie, our fantastic waitress and my new fav person in Lampasas, even gave me a hit of Sprite to turn into a refreshing radler. I thought I was already in heaven w/my beer, but oh was I wrong. My heaven arrived in the form of the most perfect reuben I have had in a very very long time!
Anyone who knows me knows my affinity for this hot sandwich (if it were a man, we'd be celebrating our Crystal wedding anniversary). So I do not give out whimsical flights of fancy and adorationg when it comes to a reuben. But, this thing was just fantastic! From the bread, to the meat, to especially the kraut! The kraut...it was simply sweet, sour, textured perfection! This thing was so good I am tentatively declaring it the best reuben I have had in the quasi-ATX area! Though, my gastro-bliss did not end at the reuben. My friend shared some of her schnitzel sammie and I was blown away! Seriously, this thing was the essence of simplicity, but the flavor it packed between the breaded pork and the horseradish was incredible! I never thought I'd like a piece of pork other than bacon.
As full as we were between our beers and sandwiches, we had to have dessert. They bake everything fresh and in-house and my friend and I had been having eye-love affairs w/the black forest cake and cherry strudel. We shared both pieces and though it hurt (so good) we cleaned our beautifully presented plates. I got an espresso as well; it was rich and perfectly smooth, but with the roasted bite I love.
After paying a very reasonable tab, we waddled ourselves out to the car. The drive home was a bit dangerous because both of us were in a full fledged contented food coma. I am already planning my next drive out to get...
Read moreIt is with a heavy heart that I leave this review. Please know I have already attempted to discuss this privately with the owner prior to choosing to make a negative review. In response, I got "I'm sorry you feel that way." I am a mother to 2 yr old triplets. My kids are not perfect. One of my daughters had been saying "Hey, mom" in a loud voice. And my son had been yelling just above his normal voice for a few minutes. In total, we had been in the restaurant 5-10 minutes. This is a small town, and what I thought was a family, small town business. We had eaten here many times, recommend the food to our friends, family, and even strangers. The wait staff and kitchen staff are excellent. The food is never bad and usually pretty dang good for a small town. After this incident, I learned that two other patrons allegedly made complaints about the noise from my kids. It's understandable that the restaurant would need to address that with us at that point. If I were in their position, I would do the same. The problem is how this was addressed. A woman came to our table, interrupted our conversation where I was correcting my son, did not introduce herself, and began speaking. While speaking, she was bent over slightly, made big eyes, and told us to use our inside voices. She was loud and incredibly demeaning. She told us if we needed anything to ask and left after one of us were finally able to regain composure and say "ok." When our waitress returned, we asked who that was. She said the owner's wife. I let her know we felt she was very rude and we were humiliated. She assured us our kids were fine and being appropriate for their age. She brought the kids coloring pages and crayons. I knew the restaurant had those and didn't want them because food comes out quick, usually, and I wanted my kids to eat. It was presumptuous for them to be sent out as if I couldn't control my slightly loud child. We decided at that point we were leaving because we were so uncomfortable. One of us attempted to pay for our drinks and were told not to worry about it. As we were getting up from the table, the waitress let us know the food was just about coming out. But because of how we were treated, we left. As stated earlier, I reached out to the owner who would not acknowledge in any way that the manner they addressed this difficult situation could be improved in even the most minor way. TL:DR don't bring your children here unless they are perfect or you are willing to be publicly belittled by the...
Read moreWe came here for my 65th Birthday dinner. I was a bit leery because the last time I was here (with one of their regular customers a couple of years ago) the Bratwurst wasn't that good and I was treated like I was crazy because I only wanted a Brat and a bun. I'm a Gastric Bypass patient and sometimes I get tired of having to explain my food needs or choices. This time, when I asked if I could have the childrens wienerschnitzel I was treated kindly and she explained to me that she was not allowed to sell a child's portion to anyone over the age of 12 and that the portion's really weren't that much smaller, which is what I was after. The lemonade was excellent and came just a few minutes before the salads. I love that they have an option to the red cabbage because neither my husband or I like it and we hate to waste food. The green beans.... I don't know how they were cooked but they were amazing!!! I usually hesitate to get green beans in a restaurant because unfortunately Texans/Southerners love to cook their green beans with bacon products which to me just makes them greasy and masks the green bean taste. We both got the wienerschnitzel and it came with the mushroom gravy on the side which was great for me!! I eat very slowly and gravy covered food is just not my favorite. He got the fries which were good and I got the Spatzel (sp) which was so good I was sorry I didn't get the cheese ones! When the young lady sat the food down she told me that she had them cut it a little smaller for me and I was really appreciative. She was such a sweetheart and gave us such wonderful and attentive service that we stopped and told the owners husband (who was making the rounds) what good service we had gotten and how wonderful the food was. I found out later on that the young lady, I believe, was his granddaughter. It's always nice to see family working family restaurants because they're the ones that care the most and it showed. I had so much food left over as you can see from the picture that I had lunch and dinner from it the next day! We will most definitely be...
