Blue Owl Coffee — Restaurant in Lansing

I've heard good things about the location in Old Town. This one apparently doesn't have the same charm.

I don't ask for a lot when dealing with restaurants or cafes. I def don't want a song and dance. But, the bare minimum I ask for is just be friendly. I was met with barely a greeting, my smile was met with a blank stare, the person who brought out my order sat it down and said "here" when it was done and barely looked at me, and I'm pretty sure I didn't hear a 'thank you' once.

I picked up drinks for other people on this run, so I was going to give this review at least 3 stars in case maybe their beverages were good but the service sucked. But out of the 3 drinks I ordered, they all said the coffee was burnt and the cups weren't even full (probably 3/4 of the way for the hot beverages).

If you just want someone to give you sub-par coffee and don't care if they're rude or not, maybe this will be your place. For me, it's a no...

HEALTH WARNING: Do not bring little kids.

The coffee and service were very good here, however, there appear to be some serious health concerns here.

Most of the tables in the shop were old wooden doors with a piece of glass on top of them. Unfortunately, underneath the glass is what looks to me (after 3 years experience as a professional painter) as loose lead paint. There is also some of this paint exposed around the edges of the table were the glass covering is not present.

For adults this is a minor risk, but for small children or those with them at home, loose chips of lead paint can cause neurological damage. Little kids like to pick at loose paint, and so the furniture is a dangerous temptation for any children who happen to visit.

Hopefully I was mistaken (as I did not bring a lead paint test with me) and there are probably not many little kids visiting here, but this is a serious...

I can see why Google asked me to review Blue Owl Coffee. After all... I googled the hours and then used my Google maps to get me there. But Google... You are mistaken, we didn't go IN Blue Owl. Because even though my wife and I REALLY wanted some good coffee for our date night, when we arrived, it was closed. Yes, they're online presence said they were open. Yes, the hours on the door said they were open. But they weren't. Glad we wasted our date night time driving there. I DO like their coffee, that's why I wanted to have my wife experience it. So, I'm still giving them 3 stars. In this age, I shouldn't have to call ahead to see if a place is open.

UPDATE: After seeing this review, the Blue Owl quickly reached out, apologized and discussed the issue. While I was disappointed to not get my coffee fix... Reaching out was great customer service; the kind I expect from great...
