Being from New York City, I've been exposed to a lot of sushi in my life. Unfortunately, since moving to the midwest away from any sort of coastal breeze or salt spray, I've been exposed to a lot of bad sushi.
Osaka has singularly shocked my previous conception of the quality of sushi available in Kansas City. Thank God I opened a shop in Leavenworth!
Their fish is fresh, their prices are very reasonable, and, while they really specialize in rolls, they seem to have fun when conceiving each one of them. For a great roll, as well as a laugh, I suggest the caterpillar roll and the mongolian beef roll - as I understand it, the owner (very nice tall young guy behind the sushi bar) is Korean and they serve korean food, as well, which is found at the back of the menu. Mongolian, Korean, Japanese... whatever, I'll eat it all.
In terms of layout, there's not much to Osaka. The place has a couple flat screen TVs playing random DVDs of concerts from the likes of Stevie Wonder and Michael Bubble and the tables are all what I would consider classically imported from any American diner. It's a dive. But, the food is excellent. The freshness of the fish is easily observable and you can tell there is some general reverence for the treatment of the food as it is being prepared. I asked one of the waitresses about the ginger one time - it has amazing flavor not found in any other sushi restaurant in KC - and she told me that is is made daily during shift change so that their recipe and ingredients cannot be marked down. Now, if you ask me, that's dedication to ginger.
Nowadays, if I spend my money on sushi, I spend it here or at Sushi House in Leawood. I highly...
Read moreOrder: Drinks - water, thai tea. The tea was perfectly sweetened and balanced in flavor. It was rich enough that I didn't want ice cream after dinner, because it was a desert in a drink. Song the best to 5 Thai tea I have ever had. 5/5 Appetizers - Heart attack and Calamari. Calamari - The calamari was actually really good. Nicely crispy, and a really good balanced flavor. The dipping sauce for it was nicely flavored and enhanced the calamari flavor. Heart attack: The Heart Attack is jalapenos cut in half filled with cream cheese and fish, and deep fried, and topped with sauce. It was a very delightful texture, and the taste was amazing. Main course - Mongolian Roll, Boyfriend Roll, Gangnam Roll, Bulgogi, and Dolsot Bibimbap. Mongolian Roll: Absolutely amazing in texture with a slight resistance from the meat, but not a tough or chewy texture. The meat was very tender. The flavor was amazingly savory, and was a very balanced. 5/5 Boyfriend Roll: great texture, raw fish on top that was amazing, overall really good 4/5 Gangnam Roll: Hands down one of the best rolls I have ever eaten. Texture was amazing, taste was amazing, and the presentation was beautifully executed. 5/5 Bulgogi & Rice: This was one of the most tender and flavorful Bulgogi I have ever had. Period. The flavor was very succulent, and the texture was simply amazing. It was a real shining star, and not horribly priced. 5/5 Dolsot Bibimbap: This was masterfully cooked, and very well done. The flavor was delectable, and they include a bottle of gochujang to make it as spicy as you want. It was very fresh, and served in a traditional...
Read moreI have been wanting to check this place out for quite a while and they before yesterday was the day I stopped in because they had a sign out saying there was a lunch special couldn’t tell a word about what was on that special because it just didn’t recognize any of it. Except sushi.
The service was outstanding very there, but not there, always ready to fill a glass, clean, courteous it was outstanding.
The sushi was fresh. I mean absolutely fresh it was delicious and there’s only sushi was very fast for as busy as they were.
I understand there’s only one cook in the kitchen. She got her stuff out just perfect and I’m telling you it was great, you get anybody who likes Chinese food would love this.
I was just amazed at the different flavors that this place has compared to other Chinese places and it’s just phenomenal. It’s worth a trip to Leavenworth to eat here. If you don’t believe me, try it for yourself.
One more thing this is a very small place hole in the wall. It’s not very expensive and you can enjoy it. It’s quiet. It’s a place for being able to talk at the same time and not having a screen because of the radio, or the music or the, other people having lunch there is a rare place....
