Visiting Laurel for a couple of days as we passed through on our way home to Alabama after visiting family in Texas for Thanksgiving. It happened to be my husband's birthday! Mr. Fish was near our Air BnB, so we decided to try it, and it did not disappoint. The service was prompt, polite, and helpful. Our food came quickly, and it was fresh tasting and hot. The restaurant is very nicely decorated with a "fishing cabin" kind of vibe, and impressed us with its cleanliness. My husband said the bathrooms were cleaner than ours at home! (Gee, thanks, Honey!) Although it serves fried fish, the restaurant smelled fresh and clean, not greasy or "fishy" like many restaurants we have been to with a similar menu. Our catfish was obviously cooked by people who know how to cook catfish! It was meaty in the middle with just the right amount of tasty breading. My husband had fried catfish with fries, baked beans, and coleslaw, and he said all of his fish and sides were yummy! I had the fried catfish with Onion Rings and baked beans, and mine were yummy, too! The onion rings were very Large! We both liked our hushpuppies. This establishment clearly does a booming take-out business, but we enjoyed dining in. They have desert cakes by the slice, and since it was my husband's birthday, we ordered the cake of the day...their poundcake! They even sent someone to the nearby Dollar General for candles just so my husband could have the traditional "make a wish" experience with his slice of cake. This was above and beyond kind and generous service! The owners even came out, introduced themselves, and sang happy birthday to him! It was a very nice and positive dining experience for both of us in every way, and we highly recommend Mr....
Read moreWe had our little 6.5 lb Maltipoo with us today and went to the outdoor window to order. We specifically asked if it was okay to have him with us on the porch to eat, and were told it was perfectly fine. So we placed our order and I went to sit down while my husband paid and I had the pup on my lap. A middle-aged woman came out the front door and asked if we were planning on eating on the porch, to which I replied that we were. She said, âThere are NO dogs allowed on the premises! None!â I told her that we HAD asked and were given the go ahead and she whirled around and gave the kitchen staff what for for giving us the okay. Then she stormed out the front door again, never giving us another look. The lady at the order window apologized, the middle-aged lady who came out and was so terribly rude did not. She strode across to her car in the parking lot and left. Itâs a good thing we hadnât paid yet because I wouldnât have eaten there if they had paid ME after that behavior. There are nice ways of saying âwe donât allow pets on the porchâ which we would have accepted gladly. Just be forewarned that you had better not have your dog with you if you do go here. We are visiting from NE Georgia and chose this restaurant based on the food reviews. Extremely...
Read moreThe fish and baked beans were good, the fries were soggy, the coleslaw was a wet, soggy mess, and it was sweet. The portions were very sparse for the price ($30 for two plates) and the hush puppies were a weird donut-like consistency. The shrimp were few and far between. I donât like leaving bad reviews, especially on black businesses but these people rubbed me the wrong way. Playing into anti-black respectability politics via anti-black dress codes is something that is always going to get a reaction from me. Iâm trying to support black owned businesses but when they treat you worse than other folks, it becomes hard. If I am a paying customer, you should be happy for the business instead of trying to dictate what a person is wearing, especially if they are dressed decently. If you are catering to non-black people, just say that instead of singling out young black males with your dress code and regulations. My partner wasnât even sagging his clothes, he had on work pants and a work shirt and was told to pull up his pants. I was astounded. Next time you want to tell someone to pull up their pants, make sure you comb...
