I decided to visit this place on a whim, tagging along with a co-worker who was celebrating our completion of a long chapter in our careers. I figured that I should try a burger born in Oklahoma before I left the state.
My companion said he had the best burger of his life here. It was the biggest disappointment I've had. He's 22 and from Tennessee, while I'm much older and far more traveled.
I was told it was a "skill issue", with me ordering something not to my tastes. I picked the "Old Town Road" burger (11.59). The menu stated it had a lot of fried stuff, including deep-fried jalapeño. Coming off of my first ever Cracker Barrel visit, and Ann's Country Kitchen, I expected a place in the south would make something magical with fried food expertise, considering how greasy those places were.
The burger came with a large fried jalapeño (whole, not battered) pinned on the top of the bun, making the bun extra greasy. My companion thought it was a pickle. The bun was a said to be a brioche, that appeared buttered and toasted, but I found it had a generic taste and texture. The toastiness was completely gone by the time it got to me. The bun smushed down easily and flopped under the weight, very similar to any other generic burger bun.
Under the top bun, I found a couple of 1/3-length bacon strips crossing each other, sandwiched between layers of thin fried onion rings (non-battered). The bacon was hard and chewy, rather than crispy, dripping in grease.
The burger patty was buried under finely shredded cheddar. It was slightly melted in some parts, but mostly kept its stack of needles appearance, with a couple of battered and fried slices of jalapeños caught between some onion rings atop the heap of cheese.
My experience: my mouth was unable to handle the heat, urged to eat more of the burger for the cheese. I'm not normally so sensitive to this level of heat--I usually dip poppers in sauce, which I believe is ranch, but I imagine srirachi would work for my tastes. This burger's heat overpowered most other tastes. I guess this is why the jalapeño was outside the burger. The grease amplified the effectiveness of the pepper, I figure, in an agonizing way.
The day before, I had a bacon double cheeseburger from Freddy's, which was very pleasing, with the crispy ends of the patties and the crispy bacon providing bursts of intense smokey flavors. The day before that, I had a basic homemade 1/4 lb cheeseburger, with a bun that was still toasty. The bun's fresh toastiness alone deserves credit for elevating the experience over this one.
The fries here are pretty good, but I think that's because of the toasty texture and seasoning. I figure that I could actually get the kind of experience I want by just doing "smashed grilled cheese" in a George Foreman grill, honestly, while being far less greasy and less salty. I'm here writing this with a stomach that's roiling from the food, a heart that is noticeably beating harder, with a bit of a headache coming on. It's weird how I can feel my blood being whished from my hips and pecs to my belly, with old aches in my knee firing up again. I'm guessing it's destroying my gut microbiome. I'm not sure if it's this place's food, or if it's just the straw that broke the camel's back. I suspect it's what I just ate from here, perhaps a response to an overly greasy meal.
I don't give 5-star ratings for typical/average experiences. No complaints about anything else. The atmosphere had an old dad-rock vibe to it, as if some 90s teen, whose identity was shaped by the alternative rock music they were into, had used the collectibles in his garage to...
Read moreThis was my first time here. I've been wanting to try this place for the last two years. We called in our order. I asked for my burger to be done. The lady asked me what I considered done because she considers done to be medium well. I told her "well done". I went inside to pickup. The place seemed clean and inviting. I was greeted by a young waitress first then she told the lady who took my order I was there. I was handed my food and drove home. Of course I snuck some fries on way home. They were salty so I stopped after the first pinch of fries. Arrived at home and took our food out. I took a bite of my burger and then saw the burger was the brightest pink, yuk. Not slightly pink, it was PINK. I tried taking another bite around the edge and I would just throw away the rest. The second bite was just a bad. I knew I could not eat it. I called in to let them know. The same lady answered and said she would remake. You can hear the irritation in her tone. After I hung up phone I started eating the fries before they got cold while waiting on burger to be cooked. I shook the box to shake the salt around thinking it was just on the top fries. Oh my, after the third bite I could not handle anymore..... just too salty. BF is now sitting down to eat. He had ordered a plain cheeseburger. I told the lady "meat and cheese only". Well his burger tasted like bacon. He can't eat bacon. Itold him to try his fries. he said they were really salty but he'll eat them. after a few more bites he said he couldn't handle it anymore. So when I went back to restaurant I handed her the entire bag. I told her what was wrong. She wanted to argue about it tasting like bacon. I kept calm and quiet tone even though she was irritated. She decided to redo order. I waited in a booth while they prepared food. During this time I heard her talking $hit to the cook and another waitress about me and my complaints about too salty fries, red burger and bacon tasting burger. I looked up at her and she looked at me. she got quiet. So I looked back down. Then I witnessed the table across from me recieving their food. In the order a child was to get a fruit cup. when the mother was handed only pineapple fruit cup she handed back to waitress nicely and said he's allergic to pineapples. The waitress was professional and took it to the lady I was dealing with. Again I heard her talk $hit now about the mother. I received my order and I said "thank you". She turned her back to me, started walking off and then rudely said "thank you". I got home the food was good. I will never return to this place because of this one lady. All the other employees seemed to be friendly. But one bad apple spoils the whole batch!!! You can look at my profile and see I don't write complaints and we have all had our fair share of employees who don't want to be at work. so me saying this should help you understand if I'm complaining it's legit, lol. I see others have made the same complaint about fries being to salty and even a complaint about a raw burger. I guess I want the only lucky one to receive special food 😁. We did not order drinks. For 2 burgers and 2 fries, it was just over $30, I don't believe it is too much to ask for food to be eatable. I wish I took a picture of my...
Read moreEDIT 2 (2022): unfortunately, things have changed...😔 In the past four years this place had changed. A lot. COVID certainly didn't do it any favors, but that's only part of it. They stopped with their monthly specialty items which is a bummer but not a deal breaker. The service and staff are not as quick or as friendly as they used to be, and the food quality is noticeably lesser. For example, I got the smokin okie tonight (my go to) and the smoked Gouda on it was a slice as opposed to the freshly grated smoked Gouda they used before. The bacon was cheap and thin, and the burger seemed like a premade patty. It screamed cheap. Luckily my server was nice, but the last two trips before we're not the same. The time before last I stood at the front for 10 (not exaggerating) minutes while the servers talked at the stand, walked around, and picked at their own food. It wasn't even busy, there were more empty tables than full. They finally got to me, and then the service was just as horrible. It's a shame because this used to be such a great place that I always recommended to people, but unfortunately I can't recommend it as "one of the best in Lawton" any longer.
EDIT 1: 25% MILITARY DISCOUNT I've eaten here countless times since my first review, and it never ceases to amaze me. My favorite restaurant in all of Lawton probably!
(Just a heads up, everything cooked here is homemade in their kitchen!!) This was my first trek into Lawton to try something that is more crafty and not a chain restaurant. I was impressed through and through. The menu options here are quite creative and delicious. I started with the peanut butter bacon fries, which are sweet potato fries. They were amazing. Even the fries themselves we're so light and crisp, you could tell they were cut fresh. I made the mistake/awesome decision of ordering 3 sliders thinking I would try out some of the radical burger flavors. I loved each one. One of them had a coffee crust and a cilantro lime salsa, the other had swiss cheese, mushrooms, and a scratch made french onion dip. The third one was topped with a house made BBQ that was out of this world, grilled chilès, and smoked Gouda. That BBQ was AMAZING, and I've had a lot of BBQ sauce in my life. My only regret was not saving room for a boozy milkshake, which is offered in a number of similarly radical combinations. The service was stellar, my drinks were filled instantly and I was even given a to go drink without question or hesitation. My server was very excited to share her favorites on the menu and was insightful. I would highly recommend this place to anyone looking for great food...
