My wife & I are big BBQ fans. In fact, we run our smoker at least 2 weekends a month while eating out in BBQ restaurants usually for the other two. We live 2 hours away, but frequently go to the QC area to see family. The two of us stopped in this last Saturday (5-4) to finally try What BBQ.
It's a nice, little setting & our waitress was extremely friendly, but that might be as good as it got. I was nervous because I didn't smell any smoke or anything when we sat down but kept telling myself "maybe the smoker's outside". The ordered 4oz brisket, 4oz pulled pork, mac & cheese & a single corn muffin. The wife ordered their big sampler (I don't remember what it was called but it said it was $25.00 on the menu but showed up on my bill at $30.00), so we could try some other items & take some home. We also got an appetizer of chicken bites.
For the $70.00 bill I paid I'll start with the good- the service, the cleanliness, the mac & cheese (although a pitifully small portion), the fried chicken bites were really good. Not so good however to get us want to come back. The brisket was chopped up & tasted like pot roast cooked the day before in a crockpot & then microwaved before being served. Same thing with the pulled pork. No evidence these meats EVER saw any smoke or that they were even freshly cooked. The wife's baked potato was hard & raw in places. The corn muffin was so sickenly sweet it was more like a corn-flavored cupcake. I really wanted to recommend this place because how nice everyone was, but I can't.
After eating BBQ for 58 years & cooking it for over 40 years I expected more (at least something that was smoked recently). Sorry for the negative review but we feel like we were a...
Read moreThe place was perfect! I visited the le claire area a little over a year ago and a friend found this place with a Google search for bbq in the area so we took the chance. When we arrived i had my doubts due to the size of the place, but those doubts were soon cast aside once you went in. The smell of the food from the kitchen catches your attention first the next thing the wait staff greeting with a smile. Menu is straight forward. We were informed of item's that were unavailable that day as soon as we sat down. Which was great to know what not to ask for. All the food that was ordered was amazing but those homemade sides are what stole the show. I had the chance to speak with the owner and pass my compliments in person and enjoy a little conversation about the food and our shared love of bbq which you don't get at many places. Bbq is about sharing, family and friends that's exactly what you get here. Top to bottom what bbq is the place you need to try when you're in the area. I could rave and rave about the food but it is best said just try it. Anything on the menu. Just pick it you won't be disappointed i promise. Have a conversation with the owner who is usually there. Get the story of how they started you won't leave...
Read moreWent to What Bar Be Que on Sunday 3/27/22. Had been there several times before and my son’s family and I were celebrating my grandson’s birthday. Unfortunately, we will NEVER go back! Another party came in with a service dog and were seated after speaking to the staff. The owner of the restaurant came out of the back and very loudly and rudely took exception to the dog and the party left. He then proceeded to talk to another patron who asked about the situation in an increasingly loud and demeaning manner. The owner could not seem to control his emotions and by this time we were discussing getting our food to go due to the situation. He overheard us deciding what to do and started to loudly defend his actions. While as the owner he can ask people to leave, he should realize that by being loud and obnoxious, he’s driving people away. As we walked out, he made a rude, profane remark to my daughter in law. We will never return and it’s a shame that a restaurant we’d always enjoyed is owned by someone who cannot control his temper or his mouth. This is not the image LeClaire wants to project. I feel sorry for...
