We came here because the place was highly rated on Google and we were in the mood for Cuban food and mojitos - this restaurant had a description on Google which included the words, "many Cuban dishes...." so we were excited to try it.
We came around 6 pm on a Saturday and it was empty (it's also during the COVID-19 pandemic going on which certainly would play a part). We wanted to sit outside which they graciously accommodated. As we walked to the patio section with the hostess, we counted a total of 3 other diners sitting inside and we were the only ones to sit outside during our entire stay. As we wrapped our food up, another table had just been seated outside. The menu didn't seem to have a ton of Cuban options but maybe we weren't looking closely enough.
We both ordered a classic mojito...they were not good. I can't quite pinpoint what we didn't like about the drinks but we knew it wasn't what we expected. It was a letdown.
We shared a calamari appetizer which was a surprisingly small portion. The calamari was crispy but consistently tiny pieces. It came with marinara sauce which was extremely cold and tasted as though it came out of a jar. That was extremely disappointing and arguably the worst part of our visit.
We ordered fish and chips and the cuban sandwich as our entrees. The cuban sandwich was okay. It was better than the appetizer and mojito but it wasn't something we were blown away by - we've had better and we've had worse.
The fish and chips were good and hot. No complaints. It was what I expected.
Our waitress wasn't bad. She gave us plenty of space and time to look over the menu. She did her job.
Our bill came to $52 which was also very surprising but it's to be expected - especially when seafood is involved. All in all, maybe we came at a bad time. The reviews for this location are resoundingly positive so there's a legitimate chance that we just were in the right place at the wrong time. Everything just tasted...bland or...average. Not sure if...
Read moreYIKES!! Horrible experience, will never go back. Too bad there aren't negative star ratings. It took slightly over an hour to get our food. We went last Saturday evening around 8:40ish (note, they close @ 10p). Saw only 4 families in restaurant, yet no one at lobby to seat us for a bit. The bartender finally noticed and waved a waitress down. We were seated, and ordered our drinks, appetizer and food. The staff looked like they were in a daze (so strange). Drinks came about 5 minutes later, and appetizer about 20 minutes after that. 10 minutes later we are told that there is no pizza (ordered 2 for kiddos). My kids are picky and wanted nothing else, except the mac & cheese we ordered earlier & a dessert, which were brought with the Cuban, and snapper a full hour later. Mac & cheese was runny. Cuban was dry and bland (I'm from PR and have been eating and making Cubans all my life, and the Cuban needs help stat). Fish was overcooked & dry. Failed to mention that about 20 minutes in, we witnessed one of the families that was seated at the patio, walked out after having a heated discussion with a waitress (they had only drinks at their table). I'm assuming they got tired of waiting for their food and left very upset. Ok, back to us. I wanted to leave, but we were hungry and since it was so late my husband talked me into waiting it out. We've never experinced anything like this before. We waited 30 minutes to be told no pizzas, a full hour for the rest of food (a friggin sandwich and some mac & cheese, come on man). This place needs some serious training in customer service, and needs kitchen staff during ALL hours...
Read moreMy father came from out of state to spend time with us. Our last meal before he left was at SSG for a party of five. I thought the reviews looked good and thought I'd give it a try since he wanted seafood. Here's what happened.
We were asked immediately if we wanted appetizers as the drink order was taken. I responded, "I don't know, we just sat down." Told that a "Cherry Sprite" was not available for my kid (as we sat right next to the bar). I thought the table would fall apart while we sat there as it shook and wobbled with each move. Ordered two appetizers, which were good: the queso and Bam Bam Shrimp. However, we had to ask for more chips for the queso three times...as in we ran out of chips repeatedly as they weren't enough. One time, after waving across the restaurant at our server multiple times - and even hollering his name, I just got up to approach him by the straw caddy by the kitchen to tell him we needed two water refills, a Diet Coke refill, and some more chips. I ordered the glazed salmon, sautéed mushrooms, and garlic mashed potatoes: the salmon was overcooked and had zero flavor (but at least warm), the mushrooms were straight out of a can and cold, and the potatoes were cold. I ate the salmon...after I salted and peppered it. Since my father was "treating," I didn't have the heart to tell the waiter how bad the food was. Furthermore, I didn't want to wait around forever on our waiter who was nice, but oblivious.
I have no clue how the review rating is 4.4 stars. The food, the service, the table and stained menus were all part of a really...
