Haven't been to Squab's in a while, even though I work down the street. I heard they did a little bit of a remodel so I thought that I'd give them another try after being disappointed with the food quality/consistency in the past. (Though, I must say, their broasted chicken is generally pretty good). It doesn't look like they did a whole lot of remodeling, but the place was clean & tidy and they updated there overhead menu board which is, now, easy to read and reduced a little in size (I think). So I decided to try what they are supposed to be known for, their Gyros! I had ordered Gyros in the past from Squabs and had been thoroughly disappointed. So, I figure I'd give them another try and see what they've been doing for the last couple years or so. So I ordered the Gyros dinner plate for $10. It comes with a greek type salad, a pita loaded with plenty of gyros meat w/ tzatziki sauce, and a side of fries. Looks Great! However, the salad dressing was minimal and pretty much tasteless. It was served on the same plate as the gyro, so by the time I got around to actually eating the pita it was soaked with this tasteless dressing making it soggy and pretty gross to eat. While there was a generous portion of gyros meat on the plate the gyros tasted like the stuff you buy in bulk, definitely not homemade. There was also no tomatoes or onions on top of the gyro which is just sort of the defacto condiment for an gyro...I ended up taking the tomato & onions from my salad and putting it on the sandwich. What was worse, however, was the gyros were barely lukewarm lukewarm when I picked it up at the counter and ice cold by the time I got around to actually eating the soggy pita and meat...about 3-4 minutes later. Nothing worse than cold gyro meat. Gross. The fries were great!
I saw some reviews that say they have great gyros... These people don't know what a great gyro is supposed to taste like. If you'd like to know try the Greek Isles in Lombard, hands down the best in the burbs, with homemade gyro meat which is served piping HOT with a thick delicious pita. Granted they are not a fast food establishment but they are my standard when judging an gyro. Squabs doesn't come close.
A little advice to Squabs: Try caring a little bit about the food your serving. There is no reason to not throw the gyro meat and pita on the griddle and heat it up. Serve the salad on a separate dish OR with the dressing on the side. Make a salad dressing that has some taste - maybe a tad more vinegar and some herbs? It's not tough or expensive to up the flavor level.
I have no plans on going back to Squab's for another couple years...or until I hear they have upped their game. It's a shame because if they could maintain their quality and consistency I'd eat there once or twice a week, instead of every...
Read moreWe've lived in Bensenville for years and never really travel this way unless we have things in this area. We Always travel west towards v.p. elmhurst, Bensenville. We found Squabs on our way home from Chicago. Hubby wanted a beef or gyro & they came up. We were delighted with the service. Our cashier was very helpful & knowledgeable. Young lady with brown hair. Glorianna I think. 2 teenagers stood off to the side busying themselves with nothing. There was an older man maybe the owner or manager our cashier asked about chicken. He was yelling back through the window to the kitchen. They don't sell chicken just a leg or thigh you have to get a few pieces/meal. We bought 2 gyros plates & the smallest chicken meal they had because we wanted to try it. The chicken took 15+ minutes which we didn't mind because we had our main meal. Gyros came with fries & a drink. Fries were Fry's. I actually salted them at the table which I normally don't do. The gyros were delicious, flavorful, & plenty of meat. I would have liked more sauce but it was a good amount. If you're not a big eater ask for the sauce on the side with an extra pita & make 2 meals out of it. The chicken was good but I've had better. I would come back to try other items & for...
Read moreI would NOT recommend Squabs to anyone. We are the type of people that if the food or service is not acceptable, we will give them another chance. Let's face it, everyone has an off day. However, these same problems come up again, its time to stop giving them our hard earned money. First of all, EVERY TIME we call there, that fat white woman is RUDE on the phone. She is also rude in person. TWICE we ordered a gyro, with onions and tomatoes on the side. Both times the onions and tomatoes WERE IN the sandwich, but they did at least put it to the side inside the sandwich.I ordered a cheese burger.I wanted it medium rare, with mushroom, onions and extra cheese. What I got however, was a well done burger and no extra cheese. When ordering the burger we was told in a very snotty rude tone, "I don't put mushrooms on my burgers, now what do you want on it?" Again she was told onions and extra cheese on a medium rare burger. Finally we had to say extra cheese and onions ONLY. There are other places we can get gyros and burgers. We would probably get our order done right and without the rude, snotty attitude from that fat white woman with a perpetual case of PMS We only go to squabs because it is close. Squabs will never get another...
