I used to LOVE coming here to eat. I think we ate at this restaurant at least twice this week. Once we find something we like, we’re pretty consistent. Unfortunately, tonight was the worst dining experience I’ve had in many years. The small issues were that the waiter forgot our appetizer. When we finally got it we were a good 20-30 minutes into our wait for food. He got the orders wrong for me and my son. For our son we just ordered a second meal and paid for both. The waiter asked if I wanted my order remade so it would be correct. I said yes, that would be good. Here’s the big issue-When I got my “new”/remade order, they had taken parts off the old plate to put on the new one. And there was a long black hair shoved in the food. I can overlook accidents. I know people are human. But, I do not feel the hair got there by accident. That hair was with the recycled food and when I poked through the food earlier on the first plate, that hair was not there. The manager came by, apologized, and took the plate off the order. But our whole experience was ruined. And how can I trust the same kitchen staff and servers to make me something else? I will never come back to Agavero and I do not recommend it to anyone else. Furthermore, I do not feel management went far enough to remedy the situation. When something like hair gets in your food, simply saying you will not charge the customer for the hairy food is a given. Asking if you can get them something else is absurd. In my opinion the whole ticket should have been written off. Taking that loss would have better communicated a sincere apology and a value for the customer’s experience. If that had happened, I might have concluded the cook and/or wait staff was terrible but I would have trusted the manager to make needed improvements with the employees. Instead, I walked away with a lack of confidence in the manager as well. Let me add some additional context because someone asked: The waiter forgot the appetizer and it came out 20-30 minutes after we ordered it and reminded him of the order. We did not receive one refill on our drinks or water. The waiter brought out the wrong food for my son. We ordered my son a regular quesadilla. He brought out the kids version. Now mind you, we didn’t even have the kids menu with us when we ordered. So, we just ordered another one. I asked for 2 bean quesadillas and 2 cheese quesadillas. He brought out 4 bean quesadillas and told me cheese was in there. Yes, I feel the hair was intentionally put in the food. I cut each of the quesadillas in half when I got my first plate, just to check them. When I got my “new” order, I had two of the same bean quesadillas (they were cut in half) and the string of hair. If you had a good experience there, I’m glad for you, but I can’t support spiteful business like that and wish you would not either. I could have been okay if I thought this was an accident. But the recycled food and length of the hair tells...

I may or may not be La Gringa Vampira... I am paler than my favorite queso... and I can no longer eat jalapeños, sadly, but nevertheless, I love authentic Mexican food and dining atmosphere, especially after spending a month in the Yucatan jungle and traveling to several major cities in my youth. I didn't have as much fun in Cancun, which felt like Florida, but cleaner. The tourism made it more like the US, but I felt very out of place... I hate Florida. (Sunlight gives me migraines, and they have no real trees for shade) I felt far more at home in the Yucatan, where I was objectively more alien... the only pastey goth kid for who knows how far, but not fitting in is very normal for me. What captured my heart was how welcome I was made to feel, despite my outlandish appearance. I was treated just like everyone else. That almost never happens to me anywhere... I didn't fit in with the group I came with, either, and I felt it around them... but with the people I met there, I found some of the most warmly welcoming and gracious hosts I've ever been blessed to encounter. And no fake hospitality or forced smiles.
And Agavero has the best service and best food I've ever had since coming back to the States. Their casa really is your casa, and as cliché as it sounds, it takes me right back to that old home away from home every time. Such good vibes. I get a bit verklempt trying to put it to words—overcome with emotions 🥹
If you ever miss really authentic Mexican food and atmosphere, or if you want a taste of it without needing a passport, I really couldn't recommend Agavero enough.
Lots of Spanish is spoken, but don't be intimidated if you can't, and don't worry if you'll be understood or not; all the staff I've spoken to speak English perfectly well, and most seem fluent in both languages, which really contributes to the authenticity, with no worries if your Español is poquito or zero. It's great for everyone, of all ages, no matter what y'all look or sound like.
America's real melting pot is here, and it's full of mucho queso delicioso. Dip in!
Dip Tip for Fellow Gringos: Saying "queso cheese" just means "cheese cheese", so it's kinda like saying "ATM machine"... "Automatic Teller Machine machine" or... "PIN number"... like, we all know what you mean, but... it's a bit awkward. You won't sound stupid but... maybe just a bit less cool. Just a lil dip tip....
Read moreEdited: As of June 12, 2020 My opinion has been altered due to my order last night. I made an order through doordash for a enchilades rancheros and received a enchilades supreme, I also ordered vegetarian fajitas with an extra side of tortillas, now not only did I not get the tortillas I paid extra for but I didnt get the tortillas that are supposed to come with the fajitas. So i had fajitas with no tortillas. When calling, it took 4 calls for someone to answer, and when she picked up I told her I had a problem with my order I just had delivered and she asks who delivered it, I said grub hub forgetting it was doordash by being upset that I had just wasted $14 worth of food that was messed up. She said they only deliver thru doordash, which at that point seemed redundant to have even asked who delivered it. I asked for a manager and a young man answered the phone without stating who he was and just a hello and I had to ask him who I was speaking to as he hadnt addressed himself or his role for the company. He asked me if i could make ANOTHER order and they would add those items to the order but I wasnt going to charge my card for additional money. I used to love and live by this restaurant anytime we ate out. But during this pandemic, Ive ordered twice thru doordash and both times were wrong but this 2nd time I addressed it and didnt even receive an apology which was the most important part to me...especially after have coming here so consistently over this year time. I understand it being Friday night that mistakes are possible, however, taking the first initial step of customer service would be to first apologize and when I didnt even get that I could see the lack on concern and sincerity. I am disappointed because I have told and invited so many ppl here over this last year but this will be my last.
First time coming here tonight and upon walking in it was very busy and after eating there, I see why! Great food! Fantastic service! The host was quick and accommodating to our 3 kids and Laura our server was AMAZING! Very quick and attentive! And they give teddy grahams to the kids. Best experience I've had in quite some time.
