Regretted stopping here… I often travel through the Central Coast and like to take a break in Los Olivos or Los Alamos, enjoy a few nice buildings and a good cup of coffee. I like Café Quackenbush in Los Olivos, visiting the antique store and, sometimes when rushing, just grab a coffee while filling the tank. I discovered Bob’s Well Bread Bakery during my most recent stop and thought I’d give it a try. I’ve had some modest successes in technology businesses and don’t mind paying top dollar for quality food and services. However, this place is top dollar for rude service. The building is very nicely designed inside and out, but when I complimented the owner his nice shop he gave me an abrupt “thank you” with a tone of annoyance. Business owners, especially those with pricey products, should expect other business owners as customers who will express interest in their creation. A better response might be “thank you, we aim to be friendly place where people like to stop when they pass through town” or anything that welcomes the expressed interest. I ordered a nice looking chocolate croissant and latte. The croissant was good considering the time of day, but the coffee was noticeably weak. Having sat in the car for an hour following two lunchtime soft drinks and having just downed a big cup of coffee I went to use the restroom. The door was propped open with a trash can following a cleaning. I asked the owner if I could move the trashcan to use the restroom, and, without apology, he bluntly explained the liability of walking on a wet floor and that they were about to close. The floor was completely dry and it was 40 minutes to the posted closing time. I didn’t argue, understood that he couldn't be bothered, and left. I won’t be...
Read moreI have no idea what the food tastes like because I was denied service for not having a face mask. And was not offered one by the business owner. Discrimination.
Response to owner: Unfortunately reasonable accommodation was not made, thus I was discriminated against. Examples of reasonable accommodation include: 1) offering an unused mask 2) providing the option to take orders outside for individuals who cannot wear a face mask for medical purposes. Yes, I denied putting on a used face mask offered by a fellow patron (for which I said, "no thank you.") because I simply cannot wear one and her mask was most likely used which goes against the point of wearing one, doesn't it? I am wondering why I was not offered a mask from the business owner nor any reasonable accommodation? Instead I was told, "You cannot be in here without a mask." This left me no choice but to quietly leave.
In case you are unaware, not all individuals are able to undergo the medical intervention of wearing a mask. Wearing a mask is a medical intervention whether you want to believe it or not. You are in violation of both CA civil code 51 AND CA health and safety code 24171.
Instead of attacking your personal character as you did mine, I'd like to focus on solutions. No one, including you or your staff was "belligerent" at the time of my visit. I'm glad to learn you have cameras. I hope there is sound as well. The replay will show I was being discriminated against.
Now that you are aware you are in violation of several laws in California, you have the ability to make changes to your business for you, your patrons and your...
Read moreThis is where you should stop for excellent baked goods and casual meals. I had the Croque Monsieur sandwich which came with a small side salad. It was pretty tasty, except I just wanted a little more Bechamel sauce so it was just a little more moist and creamy on the inside. Still, it was delicious, and I would get it again if the mood struck me. I also tried a pain au chocolat. I had read several rave reviews about their chocolate croissants. It didn't disappoint! At $4.50 each I thought it was a little overpriced, however it is almost twice as big as a typical chocolate croissant. I ate half of it after lunch and the other half later when I got home. The croissants are like the proper ones you get in France that are crisp and so flaky they make the appropriate and expected mess when you bite into it. It's all about the baking technique and right ingredients. I bought some chocolate croissants and bagels to-go to enjoy with my family the next morning. Of course being a day old they weren't quite the same, but they were still very delicious. To refresh the chocolate croissant I bake them for just five minutes in a preheated 350° oven. That got them close to being back to freshly made, but just a little more toasted. The bagels were pretty good, but didn't match the very best bagels I've had in NY. They (all 4 of the bagels I bought) weren't evenly rolled, so one section was very narrow and needed more "inner" bread for spreading and chewing. Overall, the quality and care was definitely apparent in everything I tried, and I would definitely recommend this bakery and go...
