Windmill Hot Dogs of West End — Restaurant in Long Branch

Gotta love The Windmill. This is the original location. It opened in 1963. And if you have heard reports of its demise, they are exaggerated. That was another location that was bought out and demolished so some real estate developer could build condos. In any case, they still make their "gourmet fast food". I'm not sure that that is the term I would use but it is real comfort food, plenty of good old fat and cholesterol; not a place for vegans or anyone with an aversion to gluten, carbs ot any of the other food trends. The burgers are grilled, not fried. The hotdogs snap when you bite them. Cheese fries - now what could fit the description of comfort food better than that? Went downhill. Gang was busy but didn't look at customers. Standing there for a minute when my turn came, and no one looking at me, then on the side the young server mumbled something. I asked what, then tried to give my order and as I was telling her the 5 basic items she walked away to make the order and didn't even know what I wanted. Then mumbled again and was to far away so I had to ask what she said again. Had to wait until she came closer to finish my order. I saw this with the next customer by the other server - he was miffed. Like asking a teenager to cut the lawn or take out the trash and seeing that face. Lol. A little disappointed. Have great memories growing up in LB and the windmill was the place to be with good food at reasonable price. I stopped in when returning to NJ and saw the manager and he explained how the area and crowd are not what they used to be either.. 😞 I ordered the hot dog and Chilli cheese fries and a Cali Burger. The hot dog was fine but the Chilli Fries , was scarce on cheese.😒Since I am only visiting before I leave I decided to give it another try and went in again for Chilli Cheese fries and a Chicken sandwich. Chicken was a bit dry and sadly there was barely any chilli or cheese. 😣The gentleman there was alone and it was not busy so it seems like simply lack of enthusiasm to provide good service or a good product.
