To be honest? I've been somewhat biased towards this restaurant, I'm not one to leave bad reviews if I'm uncertain or minor details arise as I take all things into consideration.
Recently I came here twice; once in a large group and next for late //brunch.
I say I've been biased because I don't think there's another restaurant where even family members can't seem to agree; it's either they like it or they don't.
My first experiences were years ago were in large family groups, I and close relative would usually order the more affordable items on their menu which I would not recommend IF YOU WANT AUTHENTIC, think this is the reason we were not convinced; seeing a fully decorated restaurant and find plates that are not 100% authentic. . In most restaurants the most affordable plates will be in the combination plates which was typiical in 70s, 80s up until early 90's.
Combos like enchilada, burrito, tostada. Chimichanga ,taco(crunchy) , enchilada etc.
So just caution to the wind if you want soft tacos make sure you order soft tacos. Items may or may not specify and if taco bell is your style than it don't matter I guess as you were not expecting something different. Anyways, this may be more to lack of specifying on menu in bit more detailed description if no picture is available.
As far as food? More food on the plate, I'd rather be fulfilled and enjoy the food than a "great atmosphere". Now if you want to enjoy mariachi music then this is the place as they have love mariachi certain days and even a center kiosk stage for small performances.
Granted, keeping that in mind, you're paying it for it all that one way or another and hence the pricing . I had trouble finding something that would suffice for good appetite under $20. So I opted for the Bistek ala tampiqueña which is skirt steak, chicken enchilada and refried beans with some salad or lettuce. While I enjoyed the food; think it was borderline too little on the plate. The enchilada sauce was nothing special, but had plenty of chicken, the skirt steak was perhaps tad small, addition of rice on this plate would be great.
That's where my biases begin, very large plates with very thin layer of beans and even rice for the plates that come with rice. This plate didn't, even adding rice to a $20+ dish would make it better value.
Given the size of the restaurant , the amount of employees it must take to run and manage a restaurant I say they do fairly well in those aspects.
Once a place a too large consitency is more difficult to maintain as turn around of employees may also be much greater.
Customer service as far as cooks and servers has always been great, like many restaurants while the hostess may seem like an easy job it is of vital importance, one which most full service restaurants tend to suffer with. While on some occasions they've done a great job the hostess sets the tone and is the first impression upon entering so keep that in mind.
Anyways, onto the food, they did a great job with our large group and this last time with exception of hostess which could do a better job.
While they provided great service checking back at least tad sooner after initial check up would not hurt in case something else was missing or arose.
I would come back and recommend just keep in mind what I've mentioned, this style and size of restaurant is not typical and it also hurts smaller restaurants when customers expect similar size and decor even in small restaurants. Each is going to have their customer base and all those factors should be considered.
I'll leave with this, while nice decor is nice, I prioritize flavor and if they have nice decor that's a plus but I'm not willing to pay much more for it...
Read moreTerrible service. Like AGGRESSIVELY bad! I had to fight to have the food I paid for given back to me. Pretty sure it got scraped out of the trash. Either way, when I DID get my food back only half of it was there. Had to argue with the waiter about DOUBLE charging me for the SAME appetizer. While he was scraping my leftovers out of the kitchen and trying to pull it together or whatever was taking him a LONG time to do, I had to take a business call. Since it was too loud in the restaurant, I told another waiter AND the hostess that I would be right back as I needed to step outside. As I was standing just outside the front door my rude waiter THEN interrupted my business call with a DEMAND that I pay him NOW! I went back to the cashier stand and did so. When I asked him about the queso mix up (ie: where he tried to charge me twice) he said, "It's on the house.". I opened the container right there at the host stand. The waiter ran off. The "manager" appeared but only seemed interested in speaking just to the hostess. In Spanish. He seemed not at ALL interested in the fact I was disgruntled. To top it off, not only was there not any additional queso (that he tried to originally charge me for) but there wasn't even the ORIGINAL queso I had JUST paid him for! So what was "on the house?". THEN it turns out ... Only about HALF remained of what I asked him to please box up! Where did my food go???? The bag and the cup looked like they had been plucked from the trash! (Pretty sure I would place money on that! No wait. I guess I just did) Dirty AND disgusting! Save your money! Go to Taco Bell! Need a Marg to wash it down? Go to the liquor store! This place should be OUT...
Read moreNovember 2024 - I decided to give this place another try. Once again, they didn't confirm the order and told me to reorder when it was canceled . I asked if I would be charged again, they said yes, so I ate somewhere else. Besides, $20 for cheese enchiladas is a complete rip off, so I'm glad the order was canceled. I've learned my lesson, never again.
I placed an online order just before they opened today. I received an email 20 mins later saying that they didn't confirm the order so my order was cancelled and money refunded. When I called I was told it would take awhile to get my money back as it had to go through the bank. I was then told I would need to place another order and pay again now that they were open to get food. I did and added sopapillas to my order. When my son got there to pick up the food he had to wait a few mins, not a big deal except the food is cold and the cheese on the beans was congealed and the cream sauce was actually cold. I can see their building from my house so it's not a far drive home. The sopapillas are just sad, check out the pictures. No honey, cinnamon, sugar, or whipped cream like the menu says and they're just flat dough that looks like it's leftover from yesterday. Currently, I'm out $45 for an order of enchiladas that are barely edible and "sopapillas" that were thrown away. What a waste, won't...
