Last visit was upsetting. I always order the same dish with a spice level of 1. Everything looked normal with a small pinch of peppers on the top of the meal. What I wasn't expecting were the extra peppers underneath. My mouth was instantly on fire when I took a bite of the food touching that second dose of peppers.
But here is were the real problem begins... My husband's water was already empty and I quickly drained the last bit of mine. He asked the Server (Tina F, according to the receipt) for more water. She proceeded to finish cleaning a couple empty tables and then went (presumably) to get more water. I was visibly uncomfortable from the unexpected peppers. So after waiting a couple more minutes he carried the glasses up front to get refills. Tina was checking someone out....and my husband bringing the glasses up front for refills upset her.
I understand that restaurants get really busy at lunch. My husband has worked in several bars and restaurants in the past so we are really sympathetic to those in the service industry and our tips usually reflect that. But the attitude and demeanor of Tina F, will absolutely keep me away from there for the foreseeable future. After the initial "Water Incident" she sweetly spoke with the table next to us thanking them for "being so patient" then with a deadpan face and monotone voice turned and asked us if we needed anything. I think the situation could have been salvaged but her body language and tone of voice, when compared to how she interacted with everyone else, made it clear she just wanted us gone... and yes, I did still tip. It was only 13% which is very low for us...but as uncomfortable as I felt just sitting there, it...

Read moreI've eaten here a few times over the years, and I have tried multiple different dishes, none have which have been life altering - just OK. To me, the mark of a good restaurant is making their food so good that you cannot wait to order from them again. You start planning your return before you even get through the meal in front of you. YYesterday, Chiang Mai failed me miserably. These were my problems:
The table service was slow. I ordered the chicken satay as an appetizer. 15 minutes went by before another server asked me if I had ordered it and brought it to my table. She then had to go find my server so he'd take my dinner order. There were 3 servers and 5 active tables. Make it make sense.
The chicken satay was cold, dry, and flavorless. It tasted like thin chicken strips doused in yellow curry powder and nothing else. The sauces served with it were also lacking in flavor. $8 for that garbage? Give me a break.
The thai iced tea was meh at best. I've had it in several other thai restaurants, and this was my least favorite by far. Somehow, however, it was the best part of my meal. $4.
The jasmine rice was overcooked and mushy. Sticky rice is fine, but almost rice pudding is not.
My fried egg was over hard, barely any yolk left for the Street Style Krapraw. $14.
With tax and a $5 tip, my total came out to $34 and change. To me, I can get better tasting food and better service almost anywhere else in town.
I don't mind paying for good food and good service, but when both are bad, I'll never recommend Chiang...
