Well, it must be a calling for Peruvian food today. I went to Longwood to pick up something from Marketplace and the little people got hungry. This is one of the restaurant on my long list to try.
I ordered the following: Ceviche Mixto: a mixture of octopus, squid, shrimp, white fish, red onions, citrus juices, cilantro, and pepper
Tallarin Verde Con Bistec: Beef steak served with Peruvian pesto linguini topped with golden fried potatoes. Now if you are steak lovers like my daughter and me who only enjoys eating medium rare juicy, flavorful, and tender steak, then this is definitely NOT the dish to order. Server was unable to tell me what beef cut this steak is. It’s a thin cut and way past well done to chewiness. Not kid-friendly at all.
1/4 Pollo a La Brasa: dark meat chicken quarter served with French fries as a kid’s meal. Both kids love the French fries and chicken. I recommend this. The chicken was moist and tender. I am glad I was able to request dark meat because grilled white meat chicken are trash for my kids.
Jalea Mixta / Family: Crispy pieces of mixed seafood, fish, fried cassava, and creole sauce - It’s lightly battered to crispiness but not oily or greasy like some other places that batter fried stuff. The fish is very tender. I believe it’s swai fish. Highly recommend. My little man and I like this.
Chicha Morada - Peruvian beverage with a taste of cinnamon, ginger, and combination of fruit juices.
Mora: BlackBerry juice
Tres Leches: little man likes it. It’s okay, better than some places I have tried but not the best in my opinion. Still worth a try. The cake texture was dry and course that reminds me of dry cornbread. I do like the level of sweetness for this Tres Leches, but too sweet, just perfect.
Overall, I paid under $85 and that’s including tip so I think the prices are very reasonable. I highly recommend the kid’s chicken with fries item and the...
Read moreEl Pollon is the best ceviche restaurant in “Orlando.” I add the quotation marks because the restaurant actually sits in Longwood but who knows where that is. The food is as one who eats ceviche with Greta frequency would expect. It’s good quality fish in well made sauces. I alway have the ceviche de pescado (fish ceviche) or the ceviche mixto (mixed ceviche including shrimp, octopus, calamari etc.), the lomo salteado (beef strips mixed with onions, tomatoes, herbs) and the papas a la huancaina (potatoes in huancaina sauce which is made from yellow peppers, I think) because these plates are delicious. I am someone who likes well made simple dishes and these are it. The ceviches can be ordered mild or spicy. The lomo is cooked well and the veggies are cooked into the plate fresh. The potatoes are a great way to lessen the heat from the ceviche. Another plate I really like are the choros a la chalaca (mussels served with a tomato, purple onion, cilantro mix on top of the mussels) which are delicious and tangy. If you like ceviche and have a hard time finding a good quality, inexpensive, and no frills ceviche then this is the...
Read moreI tried their pollo a la brasa and it was amazing. It was certainly one of the best that I've had. I've tried many Pollo a la Brasa restaurants (around 50. Some I have reviewed and others were prior to when I started reviewing) throughout the east of America and this one ranks at the top ten for sure. The skin was nicely crispy and had a carbonized flavor, which it should have, but not enough to the authentic style. In addition, the chicken was juicy and retained most of its smoky and salty flavor throughout most of the chicken. They offer other traditional peruvian dishes as well. I also tried their Arroz chaufa de pollo and it was also very delicious. It was certainly above average and was one of the better ones that I've tried around. It has the authentic flavor and ingredients. All the ingredients combined gave a delightful overall taste but none of the individual ingredients gave a deliciously strong taste to give it that 5 star rating. I did enjoy both of my choices and is more than above average for sure. I highly...
