Here is an honest review about the food, the service and the place from a visit today on 09/07/25. When we got inside nobody greeted us, no door greeter and because the person at the counter was busy taking an order from a guest. We were told by one person after we went and got menus on our own and sat down by ourselves that we do have to order at the counter ourselves after looking at the menu. So I got up after looking at the menu and ordered at the counter. They guy who was Asian taking the order was nice, he was just busy when we got in because there should be one more person greeting the guest coming in while giving out the menu and telling the guest where to sit or if we can just sit anywhere. The food thinking it was pricey would really be good. Disappointed with the burger, the patty was dry and hard and tasteless, no salt no pepper not even a little bit, it was just a sad small burger in a bun, the size was kid's size. The salad was a big piece of lettuce that you have to cut yourself with little dressing, they should've at least added more topping to it, a little more bacon and boiled egg, something extra because its pricey and I wish they just put a dressing on the side for the person to decide themselves how much dressing they want on their salad, the pie a very small slice, I ordered pie ala mode and I asked what is pie ala mode thinking it was a lot of extra they add on your pie and it was just vanilla ice cream, no cherry or strawberry on top or syrup or anything else aside from ice cream to make it at least look pretty and nothing tasted extra special about the pie, it just tasted like ordinary pie with some oats on top, they do give you a glass and water but no ice in the glass. The onion rings was ok nothing special about it just ordinary onion rings. And the review about the place, I wish they would at least turn on the AC higher since there is a heatwave, the food is so expensive and is not even good, the seats are wooden, the bathroom smelled awful. The only thing that was ok about the place was the guy at the counter who is the Asian who came right away when I called when I asked for an extra sauce for my onion rings and extra dressing for the salad. We will not come back and we will not recommend the place to anyone else. I wish owner would read this and change the place and change whoever is cooking the food if they want more customers, I wish owner would pay attention to the taste of the food and how its cooked if they will charge so much for it at least make...

You can enter from Alpine, just be aware it looks like you’re entering someone’s front yard. We entered from the driveway on Centennial. They share the property with a bakery, coffee shop and another eatery so better signage would definitely be helpful. There is only street parking which can be difficult when the Dodgers are in town otherwise it’s just fine.
Our order was taken by a very friendly and helpful lady. We ordered the cheeseburger with fries and a house made cream soda. My son had the patty melt with onion rings and a strawberry shake and we didn’t have to wait long to dig in. Both were excellent and generous. The patties were thick and juicy with melted cheese covering my burger. The bun was soft but didn’t fall apart. Lettuce, tomato, pickles and onions were on the side. I asked for house made thousand island to go with my burger and it was tangy and delicious! The fries were thicker cut with the skin on, fried crisp outside and soft inside - just perfect!
The patty melt was a beautiful sight to see, with melted Swiss cheese and the grilled rye bread shimmering with butter and came with a delicious garlic aioli. He ordered two patties but said after that one would have been more than enough - he finished it all just the same! His onion rings had a light breading and were crisp and soft inside - yummy!
The cream soda was refreshing and not overly sweet and the shake was creamy and perfect!
There is seating both inside and out in the garden, front porch and side patio. Since it was a perfect LA day, we sat on the porch.
Not inexpensive but so worth it for a special treat! Wish we had been able to go to the original Cassell’s but are so happy to highly recommend this little outpost! We’ll be back!! ...
Read moreThis place is conveniently located right at the Hotel Normandie, so I can understand why they get their patrons and travelers that don't know any better. But definitely not recommended for the quality of food. I'm giving 2 stars only for the superb friendly service and cleanliness. Other than that, forget it. What a fool I was for giving this a chance, I don't trust their cooking method. This is much like Canters on Fairfax (a much worse low-budget high-priced unappetizing diner btw). On a hot miserable day of 100 degree weather in LA, couldn't even get a properly air-conditioned dining experience. Not a good sign for a business being around for 70 years. They can easily afford a better functioning AC. But the food is horrible! Unpleasant and unappealing. DO NOT order the grilled cheese sandwich. After 2 bites; bread was cheap and greasy/cheese was made of imitation oil. And the side of hash browns....forget it....hard as a rock, sticky and crusty. Couldn't even break it apart with my fork. Never had a bad hash brown experience before. I have had a much better appetizing less priced grilled cheese elsewhere. I refused my meal and had the waitress take everything back to the cook, didn't get billed for it. What an embarrassment and disappointment to have to go through this ordeal. Better off going to Norms instead for a much more pleasant tasting coffee shop/diner hash brown experience. Food is better quality too. However I did enjoy the music and water was refreshing enough with plenty of ice to cool off though, I was thirsty so I...
