Place was good. Not good enough to prevent me from considering alternatives next time I'm in LA and need some fried fish, but a solid option. It's really a 4.5/5, but Google doesn't think we should get that option.
This is an (apparently) Asian-owned place that serves The larger Black and Latino population. This isn't as problem for me, I just mention it so that you know the KIND of fried fish place it is. Black-owned places will usually have better sides: greens, red beans & rice, macaroni & cheese, etc. Again, I'm just trying to accurately reflect the business and what they offer.
The neighborhood is terrible, but anyone local to southern California is used to this and knows the score. I got the lunch special with salad, fries, shrimp, and catfish.
The service was fine.
Fries- nothing special, but the portion is large. 4/5
Salad- pointless. It's pretty much just filler with subpar dressing. Portion was large, however. 3/5
Shrimp- good. Good size and seasoned fairly well 4.5/5
Fish (catfish)- good. Seasoned fairly well and the cook was solid. Portion was solid. 4.5/5
If you're doing the math, you know that those scores equal 4/5, but I weight the salad much lower because no one goes to a fried fish joint in LA for salad.
Should you try it? Yes. I personally would go during the day without hesitation, but I wouldn't roll up in there...
Read moreCharlie's is a little hole-in-the-wall fried fish place. Don't expect white tablecloths (in fact, there are only about 12 seats in the rather dingy restaurant area), but you won't much care about the surroundings. The service is fast and courteous, the menu is extensive and reasonably priced, the portions are generous, and the food is absolutely delicious.
Our group sampled the tilapia, sole, red snapper, catfish, and shrimp and universally agreed that it was all fantastic. Everything was cooked to perfection and was flavorful without being overly greasy. They provide a few different condiment options standard with each order. We got our food very quickly. Drink selections are limited to Shasta soda products and water, but honestly, that just added to the charm and the sodas weren't expensive. This was a really fun place to eat and we all enjoyed ourselves. If you're looking for great seafood without spending $20 a plate, this is a...
Read moreOne of the better fried fish options in LA. I like Charlie’s much better than Penguin Fish down the street and others East of it. They don’t skimp on the portions and all of our food was cooked perfectly. They have a large menu with lots of options. The Dinner and Special options are pretty much the same, both come with a salad, roll, and fries but the Special is larger in fish count. They have a large parking lot attached to the strip mall they’re located in so parking is easy. They’re to-go only and are very quick so you won’t have to wait long.
We chose the Orange Roughy Special with was really delicious and a huge portion of food, and the Jumbo Shrimp, which were also great and much better than some other places we have been to recently. Everything was perfectly fried.
Overall a good option if you’re in the mood for fish and chips. I would recommend and plan to be back...
