I was sad when Chengdu closed down but finally decided to give this a try. I think the new management pretty much just bought over the old space because things like the phone number stayed the same. Their menu is a little different though. It's more of just a typical Chinese menu without any regional specialties. I found it a little less authentic than Chengdu but still overall a solid Chinese option and I would order again. Plus the staff was very nice and efficient. It is not super "authentic" if you're going by SGV/Monterey Park/Alhambra standards, but it still is good enough.
I ordered 4 items for takeout: Dim sum Delight, chicken with black bean sauce, beef chow fun, and the spicy eggplant. Portions were very large and a great value for the money.
The chicken was good, and featured a good amount of breast meat (no weird pieces). Those of you seeking to hit your protein goals for the day will be happy.
The spicy eggplant was solid, but could've had a bit more depth of flavor. Still, I would order it again. Not too spicy, kind of a lighter sauce.
The BBQ bao and shumai in the dim sum Delight were good. The shrimp dumplings were not that great, kind of rubbery, and the vegetable and chicken dumplings were a little better. (In all fairness, these probably would have been a lot better if we had dined in, especially b/c I had a 15 minute drive home).
The beef chow fun was good, not as much deep flavor as I would have wanted but I just added a little bit of soy sauce (which came with the food) and it was perfect. Not too greasy.
Our order also came with a large rice for free. The food was packaged perfectly so nothing spilled and it was ready within 15 minutes at 6 p.m. on Sunday night of Memorial weekend, right on time.
Overall, I miss the restaurant that used to be in this space (Chengdu House was more authentic -- but the chef died :(( RIP) but I am happy that a good replacement moved in so quickly. I'm happy enough with the quality of the food to try other things on the menu, like their tofu and seafood dishes. Good luck to them and I hope they succeed! Help support a small...
Read moreIf your hot and sour soup smelled like cow manure, it could be due to a few reasons:
Contaminated Ingredients: Sometimes, ingredients can get contaminated with bacteria or other microorganisms that produce foul odors. This is especially true for meat or dairy products.
Improper Storage: If any of the ingredients were not stored properly, they could have spoiled and developed a manure-like smell.
Cross-Contamination: If the utensils or cooking surfaces were not properly cleaned, they could have introduced unwanted bacteria into the soup.
Fermentation: Certain ingredients, if left out for too long or not refrigerated, can start to ferment and produce strong, unpleasant odors.
It's definitely best to avoid eating it and maybe give your kitchen a good clean to prevent any future mishaps.
The main culprits for producing butyric acid among the microorganisms involved in fermentation are certain types of bacteria, particularly from the Clostridium genus. Here's a quick rundown:
Clostridium butyricum: This anaerobic bacterium is well-known for producing butyric acid through the fermentation process. Clostridium perfringens: Another member of the Clostridium genus, it can produce butyric acid under certain conditions.
These bacteria thrive in low-oxygen environments and break down carbohydrates to produce butyric acid, which is responsible for the characteristic foul odor.
Ensuring that your ingredients are fresh and properly stored can help prevent these unwanted bacteria from...
Read moreTHIS SHOULD BE A SICHUAN RESTAURANT Too many Americanized Chinese. We need amazing Chinese food in the Valley!
I was sad when Chengdu closed. I primarily eat Sichuan Cuisine. I decided to finally give them a try. I don’t trust the authenticity of SFV Chinese (Northridge is good but too far).
I was pleasantly surprised. I’m glad to have a Chinese restaurant within walking distance if I need a quick balanced meal.
Prices were reasonable. Food was fresh, hot, and not too oily. Good flavor. There was plenty of American Chinese dishes to choose from—a handful of less popular Chinese dishes. I prefer mama, fragrant, and pungent dishes and their sauces weren’t too sweet.
I ordered Kung Pao chicken, hot and sour soup with egg roll. The soup wasn’t that good but everything else was delicious.
S/N: I don’t like animals in restaurants! I almost didn’t order food because there was a mangy dog with a dirty backside at the counter. I walked in and there was a big black object hanging from the dog’s butt. The dog looked like it hadn’t had a bath in years! And the dog was rubbing its butt and fur on the furniture. I was disappointed and disgusted. I don’t blame the business owner but I wish people would STOP bringing animals in restaurants and grocery stores. It’s gross. Business owners can’t do anything about it—-they can be sued for...
