A friend and I tried most of the menu today.. We shared the quesadilla de hongos (mushroom), quesadilla de guisado (chorizo), tlacoyos, molotes de plátano, taco Sonia, and the pan de calabaza. We enjoyed and recommend everything. Here is my review on each of the plates.
Quesadilla de hongos: I liked it just not as much as the other plates. The tortilla and cheese were good. The mushrooms were pretty good too but I thought they needed a bit more flavor/seasoning or maybe just needed to be cooked a little more to get more of the water out and leave more of the mushroom flavor. I would have it again despite the criticism.
Molotes de plátano: I LOVED the mole negro and would like to try it with other plates if they ever expand their offerings. The plantains were also good but the texture could have been a bit better, they didn’t nail the plantain 100%. I would also have this plate again though.
Quesadilla de guisado: it is hard to choose a favorite but this was delicious. The blend of flavors was just spectacular. Best quesadilla de chorizo I have ever had.
Tlacoyos: deliciously tasty and so well made. If I’m being picky, the nopales could have been a little more seasoned but still delicious.
Taco Sonia: Wow. Such a simple combination of meats and ingredients that combine perfectly for a delicious taco!
Pan de calabaza: this bread was just right. I enjoy dessert but don’t like it overly sweet so this was a perfect combination of sweet and savory while making the squash the star of the show. Can’t wait to have this again with some coffee.
Overall, I want to give all the credit to the chef and cooks for putting together a small but grand combination of plates that feel and seem to be on theme and in great synchronicity with one another; a work of love, culture and art. I very much look forward to coming back to try the rest of the items on the menu and I’m excited to make champurrado with the masa I brought home. Speaking of which, as a big fan of champurrado, I would love to try their take on...
Read moreI read about this little spot in an article on Eater LA. And I wanted to give it a try. I’m always looking to find a good place where I can get good Mexican food. They serve antojitos (which are like appetizers?) The menu is simple, but it feels just right to take care of my Mexican food cravings. Let’s start with the location. Komal is located inside Mercado La Paloma. The Mercado’s entrance is not that visible from the street, at least not to me. I’m been driving around this area many years, and I’ve never noticed it. Once you enter the lot, the parking lot looks like it might be full, but I was able to find parking right away. I figured during lunch time, it might be kind of difficult to find a spot, but there’s also parking on the street. Once you go inside, Komal will be on your right hand side. It’s a bright spot, it looks very clean, and inviting. The food was absolutely delicious. This is the real deal. I ordered the Tlacoyos, and two quesadillas. I was very hungry, and I thought I was going to eat all that lol. I finished the tlacoyos and took a couple of bites from the quesadillas, just so I could give you my honest opinion. I have to say, I was pleasantly surprised on how good the food was. Everything was just perfectly cooked. No need to add salt or anything really. Although, the salsas that they give you are an excellent complement to the food. Their customer service was excellent. The cashier was super friendly, and she was the one that brought my food to me. And they didn’t take forever to give me my order. There’s plenty of tables where you can seat and enjoy your food. Just keep in mind that these tables are shared by the other restaurants in the Mercado, so you’re going to be sharing them with other people. But if you go when it’s not busy, then you’ll have a whole table to yourself. I think...
Read moreWe’re locals and we are always going to Mercado La Paloma. We’ve been waiting for this place to open and we were excited to see it finally open. We ordered the Tlacoyos, 2 quesadillas , molotes and their pumpkin bread. The quesadillas were amazing. We ordered the hongos and the guisado. It was soooo delicious. The tortillas were amazing as well. We weren’t a big fan of Tlacoyos, although they were ok. Tlacoyos seem to be simple as they are already but we felt like their masa was missing flavor and they were hard. Other than that the nopales were good. Their salsa wasn’t spicy but it did have a savory flavor. Overall we were happy to finally try it and we weren’t disappointed! Their agua de nopal with cucumber was also very refreshing! So happy that KOMAL has joined El Mercado...
