Read moreI am glad I finally got to see the Endeavor in person! I mean, I did see it when it was flown over Burbank, but that doesn't really count ;)
Admission to the California Science Center is free, but you do have to get timed reservations for the Endeavor exhibit. -- If you buy other tickets (such as IMAX or Pompeii) then you do not need a separate Endeavor ticket. -- But if you are seeing just the Endeavor, you have to get a ticket. The tickets themselves are free, but there are service charges involved depending on how you get them. You can get them at the box office (no service charge?), online ($2/ticket), or over the phone ($3/ticket). The only other cost involved in going to see the Endeavor is parking, which is $10/car. But if you're going in a group, that's a pretty low cost per person! I think it was totally worth it to pay to go see the Endeavor :)
The experience starts off with the "Endeavour: The California Story" exhibit where you see items from the shuttle program as well as a short video at the end that shows the Endeavor's journey to the California Science Center. It was pretty crazy to see all the work that went into closing the streets and making sure the shuttle could fit around all the phone poles and lights, etc. And then you go to the Samuel Oschin Pavilion to see the actual space shuttle!
It was really cool being able to not only see the space shuttle, but to walk all around and even underneath it! On the surrounding walls they have a lot of information about the space shuttle program and you can also see the engines. Additionally there are design concept models for the expansion of the center. It looks really cool and I will definitely be back once they complete the expansion. There is a small gift shop there as well with Endeavor merchandise and clothing.
Photo tip: The lighting in the pavilion is focused mainly on the shuttle so it's pretty much impossible to get a picture of yourself with the shuttle if you don't use flash (since you will come out completely dark). This is where the gift shop comes into play... there is good lighting in the gift shop by the exit, so pose there for a picture with the Endeavor!
After we finished our Endeavor experience my friends and I checked out some of the other exhibits at the California Science Center so it was a really fun day for us :) If you haven't been yet, and you are interested in this kind of stuff, I definitely recommend...
Read moreThe Space Shuttle Endeavour is a part of the California Science Center complex at Exposition Park. During peak times (10am to 1pm), timed tickets are given to help even out the crowds. It's free. And now the last remaining fuel tank is part of the exhibit but it is outside the large structure where the space shuttle is located. The fuel tank is absolutely massive and immediately adjacent outside the shuttle building as you exit the shuttle exhibit. There is an exhibit upstairs adjacent to the entrance to the shuttle itself. I would definitely recommend walking through and exploring this very well done area prior to entering the shuttle location. There is also a 12 minute video loop in a small theatre which is located prior to exiting. When you do enter the shuttle building, the shuttle is HUGE. You enter towards one side of the nose of the shuttle and it is truly awe inspiring and takes your breath away. Everyone stops right there to take it all in and you can tell you are all feeling the same thing together. It's also the first spot everyone has to get a picture. In order to get the whole shuttle in one shot I had to use the panorama feature of my camera. This is due to the distance from the shuttle to the walls of the building. You can't back up far enough to take the pic with the regular camera settings. You can walk all around it at ground level as well as under it. You can see the detail of each panel as well as the wear marks throughout the frame from it's time orbiting earth. The rocket engines in the rear are MASSIVE as you work your way around the tail section. There is no upper deck and no way to go to a 2nd level to get a look from a different vantage point. There are also no bay doors open, although there was a brief period of time they were open and another opportunity could happen again. It would be noted on the website and no doubt quite extensively via social media. There is no way that anyone of any age won't feel the impact of seeing the Endeavour at the California Science Center. It is not...
