LAOS 🇱🇦 Eat the World LA review: While Los Angeles can claim a lot of bests and mosts, it unfortunately ranks a stunning fifth (or fourth depending on the method of counting) in the state of California in the amount of residents that are Lao. This is easy to see in practice as well since there are so few places to find the cuisine, and those there are almost always pair it with the availability of Thai food.
But even though this Mission Hills restaurant does make those Thai concessions, their exterior is unapologetically Lao. In addition to "Lao Restaurant," the name is one of the first you learn when studying Lao: "Thank you very much."
One delicious difference worth investigating is the tam mak hoong ($9), a Lao-style papaya salad that relies on fish sauce and salty crab to do most of the work. Even when requested at middle of the road spice levels, this dish comes out ready to make your eyes water, and Lao eaters would have it no other way. The pungency of the main ingredients plays very well against the chillies, limes and garlic, making for complex bites that go many ways...

Read moreMy brother and I came here in search of the Laotian cuisine which we had never tried before. Upon arriving Jennifer greeted and went over the dishes with us. She gave us a thorough explanation and was so nice! We ordered the sausage (made and cased in house), Nem Khao Tod and Khao Piak (noodles made in house). Everything was soooo good. The Nem Khao Tod was probably my favorite as it had great textures of crispy and soft rice and flavorful meats. Mannie, the owner chef, was so sweet and truly has a love for food and cooking and is so happy to have a platform to share her amazing recipes. I’m sure all of her Thai dishes are great too but honestly I need to go back to try the other Laotian dishes and maybe get that Nem Khao Tod again. Everything is made fresh so be patient with the staff as they cook up your dishes. This is a true gem in...
