I came here many times and I drive from SD to have a “ taste of home” I’m born in Lisbon Portugal… so this Portuguese restaurant it’s amazing food and bakery from “ home”. Matar saudades da comida Portuguese
Unfortunately this past Saturday June 3 about 10:30 am, the servers were different people.
They happen to be Spanish people they didn’t have any acknowledgement of Portuguese food or Portuguese bakery or any traditional breakfast.
I asked the lady if has “ bifamas no pao” I explained her it was a “ port beef in the bread” she look at me like I was weird.. so I told her never mind, I ordered something else. She even didn’t try to ask to other employee what it was.
Then later after drinking my expressions “ bica” I asked if I could have a “ meia de leite” she look at me, like she didn’t know what it was, so I explained it’s 2 expresso with milk. Again she was look at me like I was weird.
So she called other server a man, with gray hair in Hes 30s or 40s, he was speaking Spanish with other server, he tells me oh what do you want it’s a cortadito, I told him, no sr cortadito it’s a totally different thing then meia de leite, he was speaking in Spanish and I explained what it was meia de leite, he look at me with a mad face, make me feel I was not welcome, then he brings me a cortadito, expresso with splash of milk… and he was mad at me, keep ignoring me every time I asked something more to eat.
He wasn’t not nice, he was mad, arrogant He DIDNT know nothing of Portuguese traditions foods. And was offended because I asked for a Portuguese breakfast he didn’t know about, and got mad because I ask something he didn’t know, make me feel not welcome the entire time.
It was unpleasant be served by someone that didn’t not know about Portuguese traditions food and gets offended when customers asked for something he didn’t know.
Hopefully the owner be careful and choose better the servers.
I never had issues before because was always a lady that knew Portuguese food and speak Portuguese, she was very friendly and funny.
Unfortunately this time I drove SD to LA to enjoy my country wonderful food and bakery. And I got not well received by this two servers.
I’ll keep coming enjoy the delicious food from my country. Hopefully I get better servers more smiling, more acknowledgement about traditional Portuguese food, more welcoming.
Congratulations to the owner for having this Portuguese...
Read moreWould a $25 gift certificate be enough for a heat stroke and leaving after a 75 minute wait for food? Let me add that it’s Mother’s Day!
After making reservations 2 weeks in advance, we were told that the party in front of us wasn’t leaving and we were seated outside - no problem except it was over 100 degrees outside, and we came for our first meal of the day, on Mother’s Day.
After asking repeatedly to be moved inside or at least on the patio that had fans, the answer was we’ll try, but nothing happened.
We were so hot, coupled with no food for way over an hour, I got a heat stroke. I had to keep going inside because I was so dizzy.
We kept asking for our food, but after 75 minutes I felt like I was going to faint, so we had to leave.
We paid the check which was $160 - and I called to speak to the owner who explained that they were extremely short staffed because two waiters didn’t make it. Problem was that nothing was communicated to us, and we were not given the choice to wait or not wait, as most restaurants tell you in advance if they are short staffed.
The owner, Fatima, was very apologetic and asked what she can do. I said that since I didn’t end up having food and ended up in bed all Mother’s Day because of the heat stole, I would appreciate a refund.
Fatima asked to send her the receipt, and the she disappeared. After following up by phone and email multiple times, she offered me a $25 gift certificate!!!!
I couldn’t even find the words I was so insulted. The same way she made me wait and gave me false hopes she would make this situation right, is the same way she treated us on Mother’s Day.
I will never return to this restaurant and am disgusted with the owner. Zero accountability for treating her customers well and actually standing by her word to make the situation...
Read morePORTUGAL 🇵🇹 Excerpt from Eat the World Los Angeles: There is a particularly good Portuguese bakery and restaurant tucked into the sometimes shady corner of a two story shopping plaza called the Sherman Oaks Village. It is the anchor for a building that seems to split its style inspirations between Japan and the Alps. Grab one of the few parking spots and slip into the seats at one of its outdoor tables, just far enough from Ventura to be pleasant.
Opening the doors is even more of a transformation from the busy boulevard, the signature white and blue tiles of Portugal are combined with dark woods to create the ambiance of a peaceful cafe back home. It has been almost 15 years since Natas Pastries opened back at the beginning of summer 2005, filling a void that Los Angeles had at the time for the beloved pastry enjoyed throughout the Lusophone world.
The cafe is still going strong, and has even recently expanded to a second location in Thousand Oaks, for the simple reason that the pastel de nata ($3.25 each) is outstanding. But grab anything from the pastry case and it is hard to be disappointed. Possibly the most delicious way to enjoy the yolk of an egg, the pastry has made its way around the world and back. Versions of it can be found in many other cuisines from...
