Going to be very honest.. Definitely not the best pastries I've had here in LA. Got the pain au chocolat and a cream cheese danish pastry (not sure the exact name). Granted I did come later in the day so I took this into account when tasting them. I wanted very much to give them the benefit of the doubt.
The pain au chocolat was particularly disappointing. I think it is even inferior to what you might find at a good quality local grocery store. It was very dry and stale (again it was later in the day, but it was borderline too stale), with no appreciable butteriness and flakiness. I even tried warming them up in a toaster on low heat. I noticed it did have a lot more chocolate than your typical pain au chocolat, which was something I wasn't used to. Please see photo.
The cream cheese danish was far better (but still not memorable) - the pastry base was more tender, flaky and the cream cheese-based filling was not too sweet which was nice.
The pastries, in general, are huge, especially for the price. And they close a little later than most places! But I would much rather continue exploring all the other patisseries and boulangeries here in this city. There are many other contenders for a quality croissant - Lou the French on the Block, Delvigne, La Tropezienne, Chaumont, Sweet Lily Bakery, Proof Bakery, and many others I'm not mentioning.
The two stars are solely for two pastries I tried. I realize they offer a lot of other things so I don't want to speak for them all.
FYI I went to their long-standing shop on Westwood Blvd, but I believe they're migrating to a new (nearby) location soon, so you might want to double check before checking...
Read moreI was so devastated walking in here today. I grew up with the French ladies who ran and owned this place, well decorated, incredibly kept up shop, which a huge selection of pastries. My mom bought all of my childhood European Christmas and Easter chocolates here. I came here after 25 years. There is one half wall cabinet of a few pastries. I am not sure they are French anymore. The tacky led lights hang in disarray with the double sided stickiy holders visible. No maintenance. Quite gaudy cakes on display. I assume old owner passed away (they were mature when I was a child) and someone bought it. It was a Westwood and LA staple. Now there is a large tacky Eiffel Tower taking up the table that had all the chocolates and gifts like it is trying to convince you this is a French bakery. I bought some macaroons. They were good, on the sweet side. The staff told me she didn't know if they were gluten free or not....
Read moreHad not been to this place in years. Used to be run by very pleasant people, and always a large selection of freshly prepared, luscious looking baked goods. Went there today, and was very disappointed. There was hardly anything on display, and what there was looked unappetizing. Waited very several minutes, and no one came out to serve me. Finally called them on the phone, and a very nasty, unpleasant looking guy came out, acted liked I was bothering him, and rudely told me I should have rung the bell (which was not very visible). He grudgingly told me there were only a few cakes left, which were very overpriced. Clearly not one of the original owners. Amazed this awful place is even in business! Don't waste your time going here (and it has bad...
