Wednesday is a great night to visit Stanley’s Wet Goods in Culver City if you enjoy wine tasting flights at local wine bars.
SERVICE: Amy did an amazing job with our group of 9 and I hope that she’s our server every time we return. She did an amazing job at checking in on everyone at multiple points, making sure we always had enough drinks by checking in as we were getting low, refilling water, and everything we ordered came out correctly and deliciously. ATMOSPHERE: I love that they have a wine bar on one side and a wine shop on the other. The vibe is upscale casual, with seating on a first-come, first-serve basis. They have an outdoor area with regular tables and the indoor section has both a bar and two large communal tables. I absolutely love the vibe and have for the past few years.
WINE: They have a great wine selection with a wide array of options. We did the Wednesday Night Special flight for $21 (my favorite number) which included 3 tastings of drastically different Pinot Noirs from around the world that all come out at once so you can do a true side-by-side comparison.
FOOD: They have a menu with curated items that are meant to be shared, and the top three I recommend are the meatballs ($18), baby beets ($16), and smashed potatoes ($14). As a goat cheese connoisseur, I recommend everyone get the sweet Baby Beets, with marinated red baby beets, aged Cabernet Sauvignon vinegar, whipped honey goat cheese + mascarpone, candied pecans, and micro arugula greens. The smashed potatoes had a good kick from the capers, and they pair with their house-made beef and...
Read moreI have been coming to LA for a long time. And I have been buying wine for a long time- to take home to Dubai. Over the years after trying various shops I had homed-in onto the Wine House in LA. In all my searches- online or recommendations no one ever mentioned Stanley's except earlier this week. At a lunch with a fellow UCLA parent was told about this store - and have I been missing something.
In the most unpretentious part of Venice Blvd- this is a gem. The wine selection is not your usual store which has the regular fare of Napa, Bordeaux, Tuscany etc. Just like the unusual sounding name (for a wine store) it has an unusual and eclectic selection. In fact the name reminds me of Hardware Societe in Melbourne- not denoting what the place is meant to be.
Bought 4 wines first day- all American - California and Oregon. Went back second day for drinking (they have a restaurant). Did a wine flight- the Hungarian red- didn't catch the name - was excellent. And on the 3rd day signed up for their wine club- monthly.
The owner- John Stanley was very patient with my innumerable queries- all 3 days. The service from all others at the restaurant excellent- Mattie, Matty, Bennet.
Will be recommending this place to folks for sure.
The only things I would love to see more of: wines from other parts of USA- New York (Long Island?), Colorado, Texas, Michigan etc. And increase the selection in the wines by the glass at...
Read moreEvery neighborhood should have a place like Stanley's- a chill place to shop for and enjoy some good wine! It's one of my favorite places to meet friends because it's not too loud so you can actually have a conversation.
There's different events almost every night like no corkage on Monday and all day happy hour on Tuesday. The other days vary, but there's tastings, wine flights, food trucks and live music. Happy hour weekdays from 5-7pm.
They curate an interesting selection of wines, beers and spirits from all over the world and they have some that are already chilled in their big refrigerators. The staff have been friendly and knowledgeable every time I have been in there. Tonight the owner John was even there pouring the wines for the flight!
It could get busy in the bar area so if you are going to take a big group of friends there I would recommend calling them and making a reservation. Some light snacks are available, but for an actual meal you should just go to any of the many restaurants...
