I am sad to say that I have tried this place a few times and there was hit and misses with their dishes.
I really enjoyed the Panang curry and Massaman curry. It was rich and flavorful. The pad thai dish is also a must try if you come here.
The aesthetic of the restaurant is very nice and clean. (Though it can get really loud)
The three times that I have been here there were more misses (cons) than pros so I wont be coming back anytime soon. Especially when there's so much options that's offered in the area.
The price is on the higher side but that's just what it is in this area.
Parking is extremely difficult to find unless you go during quiet hours.
The service here is subpar. Once they serve your food they make an effort to not make eye contact so you can't ask them for extras like more lime, the chili tray, or refill.
What disappointed me the most is the food! I grew up around south east Asian food and some things I do understand that they want to cut back on. BUT that doesn't excuse for old and stale food being served.
Lunch special order- I would steer away from this combination as they use food that are days old.
I got that big platter to try- It was a bit of a joke as there was nothing good about this other than the chicken dip for the chicken bbq.
Chicken Larb- add way too much sugar so it's a strange sweet salad with not enough herbs or lime juice. Papaya Salad- Universal Studios did a better version of this. They literally just shave the papaya and carrot, flavor it with a bit of water down fish sauce and threw some peanuts on it. BBQ- The portion for this was pathetic and of course, the chicken is OLD.
Hainan Chicken- the chicken was no where near edible! It was dry and tasteless. They give you a side dip to help make the food go down easier. If you've have hainan chicken, you know it's far from that. The garlic rice was tasty so if they have that, I would try that.
Pad Sa Ew- Average, nothing great or bad. There was nothing extra about this dish for me to ever order again.
The Spring Roll- The sauce was really good! I would take that sauce to go and make it myself. BUT the spring roll was premade and you can tell that it's been sitting in the refrigerator for the day. How you might ask to be aware of this.. The wrap is hard, if this was fresh it would be soft like a sheet of noodle. If you're charging $7 for a small portion, I expect some real effort put into this.
I am disappointed in this place but went to try it a couple of times because it's always packed. I thought maybe it was a fluke on my end. But my 3rd visit told me nope. That's just the Thai...
Read moreMy sister and I were just walking by when we decided to stop and enjoy some Thai food. We were so happy we did! The ambiance is very laid back and classy. We were greeted the moment we walked in and the service was wonderful throughout our entire meal.
We started off with the Firefly Calamari and it tasted great. The sauce really complimented the flavor of the calamari. We both started off with water, and I always order my water with no ice. This is usually something that someone forgets along the way or sometimes, altogether. It was refreshing to see how well they paid attention. When someone other than our main server approached our table, they were informed to not pour ice into my glass. I know this is an extremely tiny thing to point out however, it always bothers me when they disregard the request, and these ladies were attentive throughout the entire meal.
We ordered the Pad Thai and the Thai Basil Gimlet. The noodles were prepared perfectly, the hot sauce variety was perfect, the Gimlet was flavorfully delicious and all around the meal was wonderful. Our water glasses were never empty, and we were constantly checked on.
The portions are larger (but so good) so we asked if we could have a to-go box. The young lady boxed it up for us and brought us the check.
An awesome experience with one downfall. At the end of the meal, even though we were done with our entrees, we were still snacking on our calamari. The server removed it from the table without asking if we were done. I know it's understandable but, we weren't done with it. Outside of that, the service and the food was wonderful!
I would definitely recommend this place if you feel like heading out for a laid back and delicious Thai meal....
Read moreNew years eve, after getting back from shopping there are almost no places open past 830. Thai food sounded good and Thai Talay is within a 5 min walk from our hotel (in heavy rain). There are no shortage of awesome Thai joints in Chicago so it is not easy to impress us. Just like other ethnic foods in the US, the American version is always a little different from the original back home. We didn't want to have left overs so we ordered our go to plus a sampler app. The app was on point, the chicken satay was so tender that they fall off the stick when you bite into it. Now alot of other places we have been to, you will have to rip it off the stick, so this is a good sign. The Pad See You with Chicken was 60% chicken and 35% noodles plus the veggies. The meat to noodle ratio is quite rare and we almost wanted to ask for more noodles by trading in the chicken. The sauce is a little bit on the sweet side, as in overly sweet (same as the Satay sauce). My duck in red curry was awesome, a little bit of heat, thick curry and tons of duck. The only thing I don't particularly like was how dark it was in there at night time, you can barely see the food. It was darker than a night club. That was why it took me a while to edit my photos to look somewhat presentable. And yes they do charge for the rice separately so do not make that mistake of complaining at the end when you get the bill because they will specifically ask you when you order. Comparatively speaking, it is a solid 4 star in our experiences, nothing like the real thing in...
