Our first time here and we went on Sunday 12/18 to celebrate our friends birthday w/ a group of 10...
Food wise: Pupusas were delicious! I had the potato and cheese one which was great. The chilaquiles were good too and I am a fan of the chips they use. If you ask for a side of rice and beans, expect plain white rice and black beans, which was not what I was wanting, but the waitress did not clarify that. The agua frescas are refreshing and super sweet.
Service: Was not good. We called ahead and were the first large party at the restaurant when they first opened, and we were waiting a long time for our orders to be taken with the waitress going in and out and then forgetting waters and drinks, and then we waited another 30mins for our food to come out one by one. Before our food came out the waitress asked if we wanted chips and salsa while we waited which we agreed not knowing that we would later be charged for this as the waitress did not mention they were not complimentary when she offered them (most restaurants do not charge for chips&salsa which is why we were so open to it). They later offered us actual complimentary agua frescas for the wait which was really nice of them.
Payment: This is were we encountered a major problem which led to the 2 star review(I don't think it merits a 1 star while I am tempted given the RUDENESS the manager gave when we addressed our concerns). They charged us for items that were not listed on the menu or we weren't informed were going to be an additional charge (i.e., water, chips, jalapenos). Additionally, the items we were charged extra for were items that the waitress said were included with the meal price (i.e, "Do you want everything on it?" apparently means jalapenos too which is an additional $.50. We were not told that when placing the orders.) Finally, at the bottom of the receipt they charged us a gratuity for being a larger party which we expected, however, they marked the gratuity for 30% (roughly $76) and taxed it WITH our meals. CA Tips & Gratuity laws state that a mandatory gratuity can be automatically added and taxed when it is listed in print on menu, etc. We have photos of the menu which does not mention any mandatory gratuity for larger parties. Also, a standard automatic gratuity for larger parties is usually from 15-18%, not 30% without prior notice. What is even more disturbing is the manager said that they did this to another group who apparently did not check their receipt and paid the amount therefore the restaurant thinking this is okay. Our party agreed that we wouldn't have mind paying the 30% if it was stated in the menu and if the service warranted a 30% markup which it did not. Also, when we addressed our issues with the manager she was rude and adamant that we were in the wrong until after a 15 minute discussion of breaking down the orders they finally admitted there were additional charges made that shouldn't have been made, and they removed the tip from being taxed. Such a headache and unnecessary attitude. I recommend not fighting your customers, especially when they have evidence that proves you were wrong.
Overall, what was meant to be a nice Sunday birthday celebration brunch turned into a disappointing and confusing experience and we will not be returning here because even though the pupusas were good, the experience was too sour. Hopefully in the future this restaurant adds the mandatory gratuity charge print to their menus, becomes transparent in their pricing/additional charges, and receives more applications for staff. The food is good but the large group dine-in experience needs...
Read moreThis darling little restaurant has the touch of "family owned" that I haven't seen in soooooo long. The first time here, the daughter took her time to help me as I was was explaining that I wanted a fish burrito. (Pero no hay). The menu item I ordered was similar but way better... a Fish Tronquito. Yes this place is a fusion of Salvadoran, Mexican, American with unique menu items. Wow. It was amazing! 😋 😋 😋 😋 Yummy!! The size is very generous and they cut the Tronquito in half.
My husband was more interested in saving a seat outside in the patio and just said order me a chicken bowl. He never orders "bowls". So when he tasted mine, lol, he ate the other half!!! Truly it was that good (in addition to his Chicken bowl). LOL! 🤣😂 Also I had guacamole and sour cream. Their spicy hot sauce has a great kick to it! Love it. 😝❤️🔥❤️🔥
My friend ordered #27 chicken Enchilada, Taco Dorado, and Taco Placero, and he enjoyed it, too!
So you order and sit and they bring the order to you and wait on you. What a giving family. Son, daughter, and Mama owner. They asked us many times if we needed anything.
Can I tell you about us ordering some lemonade? They referred me to a deliciously hand made fusion of cucumbers, 🍋 lemons and some propreitary recipe. It had some fresh green something or other as well. Whatever it is, it is so refreshing, delicious, and something I could drink daily. A perfect blend. Coming from San Diego the owner and I hit it off. She's a sweety and gave me more for the road.
Now there is a fried banana dessert with powered sugar sprinkled on the side, which is so wonderful too! She gave that to us on the house as well. I am so wonderfully favored!!!
All fresh ingredients, made that day to order. Nothing is frozen to microwave or frozen to defrost to cook. It's fresh. Veggies, fruit, and meat. What a...
Read moreSo I’ll start with saying - my wife had been here before and for months was raving about the French Toast - said it’s the best she’s had, so we drove here from San Pedro to go on her birthday
We arrive at 2:30 and indoor seating is closed. Not the warmest outside, and they said they close at 4 (1.5hrs and we can’t sit inside). So that was annoying already, but we still stayed.
The HUGE problem is my wife got the french toast and when I saw it I was so confused how she thought it was the best. It was clearly overcooked and looked and was extremely crispy. She’s polite though so didn’t make a fuss (either to me or the waitress). She literally had one bite, and then got the rest to go. I thought it was her appetite , but she just said it wasn’t good.
I decide to go in and explain - and show the French Toast. Politely explained the situation and said I enjoyed my food (which truly was mid) but my wife’s French toast was extremely crispy and asked if there was anything they can do. The lady looks at it - and another lady asks what happened and I hear her say nothings wrong , it’s just a little crispy. Then she told me there was nothing they can do. I would post a picture of the French toast , but we just threw it away because it was...
