Michelin recommended tacos! Yea, you heard that right!
PHENOMENAL asada tacos! They are like nothing I've ever tasted before.
I lived in Mexico several years too. The asada meat tastes like the mesquite wood they use to flame them to perfection. Additionally, they seem to be imbued with lime. Something "secret" is definitely going on here. I'm not sure but the asada meat is tangy and flavorful beyond belief.
There's another dimension in Mexican food going on here. The meat has so little fat on it too. Just amazing. So, you may assume I'm saying the asada is not authentic. Well, in a way it is not. However, I would prefer to see it as innovative. It totally is the logical extension of authentic Mexican carne asada. It is a move in the right direction into the future. Authentic or not? Talk amongst yourselves.
Amazing tacos with great mesquite grill flavor. Exceptional eye candy chorizo that isn’t greasy. Gorgeous and incredibly textured hand made blue corn tortillas. Vegan options.
Where to start!? Personally I was excited to see there is a Jiquilpan Salsa! I’m from the Mexican state of Michoacán where Jiquilpan is. I was unable to find out if the owners are from Michoacán. Today though I was disappointed by the taquero’s inability to pronounce Jiquilpan. He’s very handsome though. I didn’t get to try it because it had not been labeled so I thought it wasn’t there. It was. When I found this out I saw people floating around the salsas and extremely frustrated I left. They dropped the ball big time lol.
The very high quality of the food would lead me to believe they may be from Michoacán, whose particular cuisine was submitted by Mexico to represent Mexican cuisine in general, to the organization that grants patrimony of the world notoriety.
No, not Oaxaca and NO, NOT Puebla LOL, but Michoacán was chosen for Mexico to win the honor.
Anyway….
The tacos are absolutely not greasy. The chorizo is bright red and tasty. I ordered chorizo and also potato tacos. It was around 930 pm. There were quite a few people there but no long wait. When they open it’s slightly chaotic and forget it with the salsa situation. It’s not even crowded though. No long line. Sepa
They have no seating inside, but they have tables outside. They have quite a few salsas ranging from mild to hot.
This place has Michelin status since 2023.
ONE staff member always has a smile for you. I truly appreciated it.
The rest are average very young people and I would say with more the Mexican-American style of customer service than authentic Mexican style. They are upbeat and cool. I'll give them that.
They have merch. They like the dodgers logo a bit too much. Eye roll….
They play blaring horrid music. Banda is the worst. Who cares, the spectacular food makes you forget little negative details.
They have a bathroom in the back and it’s got some cool art in it. It was clean and it’s the private kind.
The restaurant is in a large strip mall. There’s a big lot adjacent to...
Read moreWe recently visited Villa's Tacos new brick and mortar restaurant in Highland Park. As soon as I walked in, I was transported to a warm and inviting atmosphere that made me feel right at home. But what really stole the show was the food. Every dish was made with love and care, and it showed in every bite.
One thing that stood out to me was the way the food tasted just like abuelita used to make. You can really taste the traditional recipes and techniques that seem to have have been passed down for generations. It's like having a taste of history with every bite.
The difference in the quality of these tacos versus the quality of other tacos is subtle but major. The carne asada, for example, is perfectly marinated and seasoned and cooked and chopped down to perfection, making it sensational. And don't even get me started on the salsa table. It's like a rainbow of different flavors and textures that complement your meal perfectly. The vegan trio was also a highlight, especially the black bean and nopal taco.
And let's not forget about those wonderfully homemade blue corn tortillas. They're soft, yet sturdy, and have just the right amount of chewiness. They're the perfect vessel for all of the delicious fillings, and the cheesy crust really takes the tacos to the next level.
Overall, my experience at Villa's Tacos was nothing short of amazing. The food was delicious, the atmosphere was welcoming, and the staff was friendly and attentive. The music was right and the smell in the air was enticing. I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone who loves authentic tacos or just great food in general. Whether you're 10 years old or 80 years old, meat eater or vegan, you're sure to leave with a smile on your face and a...
