This iconic Los Gatos coffee shop has been serving classic American fare for nearly 30 years. Now owned by a former employee, the food seems as good — if not better — than ever. The extensive breakfast menu has all the classics (eggs, omelettes, French toast, pancakes, etc.) plus several Southern style specialty items (chicken fried waffles, shrimp and grits). Ditto for lunch, which includes everything from sandwiches and burgers to salads and fried chicken. They also serve weekend brunch but they’re not open for dinner. I met three friends for breakfast and we were lucky enough to grab one of the few outdoor tables for four. Unfortunately, it was on the narrow sidewalk instead of the new “parklet” out front so it felt a bit cramped, especially when people were walking by or gathering at the door. My Belgian waffle was cooked just right. When topped with a generous cup of fresh strawberries, blueberries, and pineapple (included) and a bit of syrup, it tasted great. I wish I’d told them to make my side order of bacon extra crispy, because it seemed a bit undercooked. My friends ordered a mushroom omelette with hash browns and toast, traditional Mexican Huevos Rancheros, and a taco salad (from the lunch menu), and everyone said that they enjoyed their meals. Service was friendly but responsiveness was average at best. The bill for four came to just over $100 including tax, tip, and a 3% credit card surcharge. With the exception of the limp bacon (ten bucks for four slices!) I think that our meals were a good value for the quantity and quality of food.

The food, in general, is good and flavorful, except that its biscuit is a bit dry and hard to eat (you will need to drink a lot of water). However, its bad seating service and fly issue concerned us a lot. During the time we were there eating, there were at least 3 flies hovering around people and foods near our seating area. When we walked out of the restaurant, there was a guy eating in outside seat. We saw at least a handful of flies hovering around him and his food. This is a serious hygiene issue! We had waited there for almost an hour. When the seating lady called another party before us and did not hear the response, she called us and crossed our name out on the waiting list. However, the previous party responded later and the lady had to seat them first. A while later the lady forgot us and tried to seat another party after us. So we contested. She had to seat us. She led us to a corner table which can seat 2 people comfortably, but not 3. We later reached out to her and asked if we can move to one of the 2 tables just opened up. She insisted that we can't move after sitting down even nothing was ordered and served then. So we had to squeeze ourselves in the crowded corner seat. We did not see any reason to prevent from moving us, but her being lazy and rude. This is really a bad seating service! The 2 issues will stop us from coming to this restaurant in the future.

My recent brunch experience here had its highs and lows. Initially, the host seemed a bit indifferent, calling out waiting parties' names so softly that it was nearly impossible to hear. However, once seated, our waiter was a delight - exceptionally friendly and accommodating, which helped improve the overall atmosphere. Although the patio boasted a charming ambiance, the absence of heaters left us shivering throughout our meal, somewhat diminishing the enjoyment. It was disappointing to have such a lovely setting compromised by the lack of temperature control. Regarding the food, it was decent overall. While everything tasted good, my hamburger had an odd texture that was somewhat off-putting. It's always a shame when one dish doesn't quite hit the mark, especially in an otherwise enjoyable meal. In summary, Southern Kitchen Los Gatos offers both positives and negatives. While the friendly service from our waiter and the pleasant patio ambiance were highlights, there were drawbacks such as poor communication from the host and inadequate heating. If you're willing to overlook these flaws in favor of decent food and enjoyable service, it might be worth a try. However, if these aspects are essential to your dining experience, you may want to explore other brunch options in the area.

If you want to GET SICK, come here. They serve you moldy food !!

I came here with my friend for breakfast. They served me the GREEN MOLDY TOASTS. I didn’t notice the moldy spots until I had taken some bites of it . I showed the server the moldy thing, he apologized for it and canceled the cost for the food , but he still charged me for the cup of latte I had. Couple of hours later I started to feel the stomach cramping and had nausea. I had to see Dr right away. It was gastritis caused by eating the wrong thing. I contacted the restaurant manager, she said she was not there and she didn’t see this happen. She said you should have taken the picture of the moldy bread to prove it (well, my friend and the two servers witnessed the whole thing) She hung up rudely before I finished talking. This restaurant used to be my favorite spot for breakfast in town. I had never had issues here before. But recently they changed the ownership and management, I guess everything has changed. You can NOT expect the same thing as before.

So if you come here, I wish you good luck !!!

1.To be continued...... They responded to my post right away , looks like they still care about the customer service. First of all, I didn’t ask you for thousands of dollars ( I don’t know how you come up with this amount ??) My medical bill is $680, I suggested you cover this cost . I underwent all the pain and suffering and had to take time off , I didn’t let you compensate for any of this , I said it clearly on the phone. You hung up rudely before I finished talking, I was not able to get your or your attorney’s contact info yet . Now you claim you didn’t receive my bills , I don’t know where I should send the medical bills ! To be continued ...... They removed the response right after I wrote my “1. To be continued ......” Interesting ! It feels like a live stream thing !! To be continued...... Now they posted it again. She said they were very friendly towards me ( soooo funny!) and she just called this whole thing “inconvenience” ( soooo funny, too !) If you come here, you may run into this kind of “inconvenience”, too . And they will say Sorry to you , Bad Luck !

To be continued ...... I thought that was it , I won’t need to write any more “ To be continued......” But now they deleted all the responses they wrote here . God knows why ! By the way, in her original response, she claimed that I asked for thousands of dollars for compensation. I was very confused. I only suggested her cover the medical bill which is $680 in total . How did she come up with “thousands of dollars” saying? One thing could be that she was basically making up stories, or some other customers have asked her for that amount of compensation and she just mixed up their case...

Food here is fantastic, and I will definitely come back for the food, so no complaints there. I take issue to the disrespectful service I received recently. A few weekends ago I showed up with my family (party of 4) to get a nice sunday brunch, and this is during covid, so there was outdoor seating. We were told we needed to wait 15-20 minutes, not a big deal. One of their male teenage or college age servers with a black baseball cap on snidely remarks at us "Please get out of the sidewalk..." and then two seconds later another guest who was already seated said "Ugh I know right??" to which he replies "I swear I've told them like 8 times already to move!" and then he storms off. My whole family heard this and we all were ticked off immediately. This is right after we had arrived, and the first notice that we had that we were in the wrong area. Yes, this is our bad you can kindly ask us to step elsewhere if that is an issue. but sorry this kind of disrespect is pretty uncalled for. There was no place to stand, and we were doing our best to distance ourselves. I didn't take issue against our server who was a kind older woman, but this teenage kid seriously has some attitude issues. You don't just say that in front of customers, let alone expect us to not remember comments like that. I hate to say this, but we were a group of asians, and I cant tell if there is some underlying resentment going on here. Needless to say I'm not tipping that boy if he ever serves us, and I normally make it a priority to tip well. Keep those comments to yourself, and dont lash out at customers. Everyone also has bad days at work, and I can sympathize, but there isn't a reason to lash out at people who had nothing...
