I finished my Jebena Coffee at 2pm at the latest and I was up until 4am without a whiff of fatigue. I went grocery shopping right after, took 3 trips up 2 floors, was active all day, but lying in bed my heart wasn’t racing, I wasn’t irritable, I wasn’t even loopy due to being up at 4am, I felt normal, joyful even, and entirely amused at how i have so much tranquil energy I could probably take the English portion of the ACT at 4am years out of high school then run a lap on a track and end with a cartwheel. I cannot do cartwheels but I knew that night I could’ve. That coffee didn’t just give me wings, it gave me claws, a beak, and it opened a library of interpretive mating dances reserved only for boy birds that underwent years of reproductive evolution. And it was delicious. Rich, full, bold, pure. It was fantastic black, with sugar, with creamer, with creamer and sugar… Abol is Ethiopian coffee and after traveling to Guatemala and Colombia and drinking their special brew, Abol reminded me of the one true source. The true coffee daddy. I may be verbose but I don’t exercise it carelessly, that Jebena coffee deserved it. And while I cannot guarantee that exact experience for everyone due to infinite variations of chemical, physical, environmental, biological, and literary factors, I cannot keep this adventure to myself. Even if you fall asleep at 9pm, you would at least have tasted a fantastic cup of coffee.

Okay, Abol’s Cafe on the corner of Cannons and Frankfort Ave. may be impossible to beat for a coffee and cultural experience. Owners Rahel and Tar are from Ethiopia, the origin of coffee and human beings, so the story goes. Rahel greeted me and prepared a traditional Ethiopian Pour Over, which was fabulous. But, I had to have a second round and she prepared for me a Latte with Timadam or Fingeru, which means “health” and it blew my taste buds away. I’ve never had anything like it. The best part of the experience though is Rachel’s stories about coffee and it’s place in Ethiopian culture. For instance, coffee was discovered when a monk saw a goat eat from the coffee tree and he then tried it and found it delicious. I also learned everything on a coffee tree has a specific purpose. Rahel will also conduct the Ethiopian Coffee Ceremony for small groups and it’s best to call in advance. I hope some friends would like to try it with me sometime. The only bad thing I can say about Abol is that it is only open 1000-200 on weekdays so i can’t stop in when I work normally, but it is open Saturday and Sunday. I absolutely love this place and can’t wait to return.

So…. This is an awesome place with a lot quietly going on. Mention you found this place in the Louisville cafe passport and you might get a 10% discount. We found them there so you kinda did as well. Abol meaning was described to us by the fellla playing guitar, as the first cup of coffee ceremony. Overall just an interesting place to spend a few moments of your life. The coffee was delicious, very flavorful and intense. The recommended drink Dolgona whipped coffee give it a try we really enjoyed it. I don’t say this often but please please stop in. Try a vegan samosa or a chechebsa or some of anything. I don’t think you’ll be disappointed. It’s likely you will want to come back.

This place is great, hands down would travel to come here. Tried multiple options a camping traveler drip coffee, Dalgona, a pour over, and thyme tea. Then, there's was the chocolate coffee.

Let's start off with the chocolate coffee, thinks of a coffee bean coated in chocolate but way better. They incorporate the coffee bean into the chocolate and it melts in mouth. I had two peices and that equates to 1 cup of coffee. My only worry is I would eat to many in one time.

Next, I got to try the drip coffee which is marketed as a camper or traveler coffee because it come in a perfect packaging that hangs on to any size cup and you pour over your hot water. The slower you pour the stronger the flavor. Which is rich, and so very smooth. I didn't need any creamer or sugar to alter the flavor. Which is a first for me.

Now for those who looking for a sweet treat, the perfect thing for you will be Dalgona. It's creamy, chocolaty, sweet with the perfect amount of coffee flavor. It's not over powering and mine was iced. Perfect for this summer heat.

The pour over was the strongest thing I tasted but it still wasn't too bitter. Acidic and smooth, with a touch of fringed rue. Which added a herbal sweetness. Reminded me of licorice or tarragon.

The final step was some Thyme Tea since my mother isn't a fan of coffee. It was very refreshing. A nice herbal tea that I would try drinking before bed.

Overall recommendation 10 out of 10 would advise to go soon for the beverages. I don't think I've ever met a coffee that didn't need cream and sugar. The owner was hilarious and personable making the experience even greater. The interior was chic and...

Yesterday I decided I was going to try a new local coffee shop and Abol is the place I chose (their menu mentioned baklava, and i couldnt resist)

This place is amazing. I actually forgot to take pictures because I was too distracted talking to the owner about the amazing atmosphere and Ethiopian language and his experiences as an immigrant in the US and his very fancy coffee machine that he was very proud of ("the Telsla of coffee makers", he called it! He showed me how it works, and it is - in fact - the Tesla of coffee machines).

So not only was the service and atmosphere absolutely inviting, the quality of human interaction I experienced was remarkable. I spent a full hour just talking and asking questions and getting to know the people working that day.

Also - they have a printer available for anyone to use (pay like $.15/page or something) - all you have to do is email them and tell them "hey im having this printed and I'm going to come get it in half an hour" - which is such a thoughtful service to offer, especially for those of us who dont have a home printer but still need to be able to print resumes and school assignments or various forms required for daily adult life.

So - if you're just looking for a great cup of coffee or a tasty treat, I would highly recommend this place. My medium coffee and baklava (a generous serving) came out to $11 - very reasonably priced.

If you are looking to connect with new people and experience a sense of community and perhaps indulge in a bit of cultural exchange, in addition to enjoying a delicious coffee, I can assure you that you wont be disappointed...
