We live in Frankfort, and picked this place for Valentine's Day dinner based on the ratings & descriptions below... all I can say is that either the people that rated it 4-5 stars have never had real sushi and don't know any better, or they've been paid to leave those reviews. Having eaten sushi all over the country, I honestly have to say that this was the blandest, most unremarkable and forgettable sushi I've ever had - I'm dumbfounded that this place has the overall ratings it does. This is a "Japanese" restaurant apparently operated by people that know little about true Japanese cuisine or how to prepare it. The sushi rolls were extremely bland, the sashimi was of terrible quality and cut, the gyoza were cheap and burnt, and the "green tea" was generic and obviously brewed from bags. Our experience there was incredibly disappointing; we jokingly considered purging out in the parking lot and starting dinner over at another Japanese place. In all seriousness - Asahi is fine for people who want a very safe first "sushi" experience, but if you're looking for quality authentic sushi you need to go elsewhere. I wish I had nicer things to report, but I don't want anyone else's expectations ruined by misleading and...
Read moreAsahi was a most delightful surprise. Nestled on Lexington Road before it merges with Frankfort Ave and Shelbyville Rd, it is a perfect spot for sushi in St. Matthews/Crescent Hill--and the best in the entire city in my opinion. I must say, it was amazing to sit at the sushi bar with my husband, and be treated with a first-class Omakase meal. I was recently in Japan, and even though I had amazing sushi in several Japanese cities-- our experience at Asahi was a comparatively beautiful evening of fresh fish, inspired dishes in "omakase" fashion, and delightful service from everyone at Asahi--even with our funny Japanese phrases (arigatou gozaimashita, oishii desu ne? Hai, oishii desu!). Omakase is a meal where the chef prepares their own special dishes not on the menu, and they come as small plates. Do yourself a favor and visit this place as often as possible! You will be rewarded with incredibly high quality food, attention to detail, fantastic hospitality, and a very high standard of service and truly delicious sushi. I cannot wait for our next visit! Thank you all, Arigatou...
Read moreI'm not normally one to complain on social media, but the service I had at dinner tonight warrants a little complaining. I took my girlfriend out to Asahi for our first Valentine's Day together. Our chef came to grill our food for us and was asking everyone if the person with them was their boyfriend or husband. He got to my girlfriend and I and asked where our valentines were. We told him we were each other's valentines. We were holding hands mind you. Clearly a couple. He proceeds to say "well it is legal, but it's such a waste to not have a man." Later he continues to insult our relationship by saying he could come home with us to "heat things up." I am appalled that I would receive this kind of treatment. I cannot believe I paid over $50 to have my relationship insulted...
