"Best Breakfast"?? Uhhm, no. Seriously, seriously disappointing. We chose to stop here on our way through Louisville because of the high ratings it has been given. I cannot seriously imagine who thinks this place is even marginally good, not the great or outstanding its touted as being. This has nothing to do with Covid--it's terrible all on its own.
We were there on a Saturday morning at 11 and it was crowded. Let's begin with the surly staff. The hostess seemed seriously put off when I chose not to sit outside on the sidewalk, right next to a dude who was smoking a foot from the table. Instead, we waited 20 minutes for an inside table, which was our mistake. We should have taken it as a sign and just kept going.
However, we wanted to give it a try since everyone seems to love the place, so we went for the classic breakfast with grits. Let's start by saying that the coffee was disgusting, and for $2.75, I expected something better than gas station quality. It wasn't. Breakfast came in a pretty timely manner, and the eggs were cooked okay for over easy. The grits were fine, once we actually seasoned them with salt since they had none in them. But, the sausage patties were like hockey pucks, and the English muffin wasn't even toasted. They give you margarine in a Solo container--not even real butter--which I would have expected from a place with such high ratings.
My husband didn't want grits, so he ordered skillet potatoes and paid extra for them. They came out raw and crunchy! When we asked the server to have them re-fired, she said, "Well, we don't have a fryer" as if that's what we wanted. No, you don't fry skillet potatoes, but they should be better than RAW. She said it would take 20 minutes to recook them. So my husband had the grits instead, unhappily.
We also ordered one buttermilk pancake, which was really the best part of the meal at Greek Diner quality. The total bill was $29 which seems pretty pricey for food that rivaled a Bob Evans.
Do yourself a favor and take a big hard pass at this place, it's not worth it and I don't see this as just being a bad day on their part. Clearly this place is checked out and I don't know when any positive reviews were written but it's one of the worst breakfasts we've had in...
Read moreBeing a local to the neighborhood, I really wanted to like this place and find a new breakfast spot. :( Our server Amy was wonderful, but the food wasn’t worth the $40 we spent for 2 people. I ordered the Baja Benedict with eggs scrambled hard, and a side of grits. My bf ordered the classic breakfast with French toast. We got our food at the same time and fairly quickly which was a plus, however our eggs were exactly the same (mine not scrambled hard) , and resembled McDonald’s egg honestly. I don’t like the wet jello like eggs which is why I asked for them scrambled hard. Both of our potatoes were raw and soggy, I had to send my plate back to ask for them to be cooked all the way and for my eggs to be recooked, even saying “extra extra hard”). when I got the next plate the eggs were exactly the same. They had put some color on the potatoes which were okay and the only thing I ate, still not crispy and seasoned like you might be expecting.. we ended up just getting boxes and leaving out of frustration when the second plate came, so didn’t even get to enjoy the experience. The grits had no flavor at all, no salt nothing. French toast we didn’t like either, overall just really disappointing from a place with so many good reviews. The tables are also very close together which made us a bit uncomfortable. Not sure if we just had a bad cook, or the people who enjoy this place have different tastebuds than us.. but we unfortunately won’t...
Read moreWe went to St. Matthews location today, on a weekday morning. We were rushed to order when it was not crowded, with plenty of open tables & we had stated it was our 1st time. We switched tables to a front corner table, away from being seated right next to the door & our server seemed put out, as she did when I asked for water with no ice. We barely sat at our corner table when she asked for a 3rd time if we were ready to order. My husband got the Ultimate Breakfast Burrito, which was good, but I did not see the sour cream sauce the menu said was on top. His side of fried potatoes were not hot & they were dry. I got the Curry Chicken Salad which hardly had any filling for $9 sandwich! One corner of the sandwich was actually empty. The menu description sounded wonderful, but I couldn't taste the chicken, or celery, onion, golden raisins or almonds. All I tasted was toast & the overly sweet & spiced dressing! The grits were served with tubs of oil "spread" & very surprised that a restaurant like this did not have real butter. Another server tried to take my plate as I was still eating with a fork in my hand. Service & food was disappointing & we did not feel that we got the value of our almost $30 for 2 meals - no drinks...
