Amazing food, incredible atmosphere, friendly people, and a whole lot of history.
We went to a super secret club, if you will, that isn't super secret, but held in a bit of confidence amongst it's members. Wow sounds so 007ish. The folks there highly recommend Miss Mary Bobo's, a member code named Goose, even called via a super secret phone number to back door the reservation process.
We decided to walk to Miss Mary Bobo's, where we arrived at a very old house with many people waiting to be called to their dining room. We checked in and we're called back immediately to our dining room. As we entered there was a table set with fine antique china, some food and cups of southern sweet tea.
We sat down and the other guests sat down as well. As the dining room filled with 10 people, one was the hostess. 4 we're whiskey runners with the same club affiliation as my wife and I. The others were Canadian transplants to Arizona on vacation.
As dinner started, lunch for the rest of us. Here in Tennessee dinner is lunch, the meal eaten at noon, while supper is the meal eaten at night after work. The hostess talked about the history of the house we were in, the town, the distillery, and the town's military affiliation with training for WWII. It was incredible, 10 complete strangers erupted into intense conversation. Before we knew it over an hour had passed, we had all eaten several helpings big amazing home cooked food, much what had, " The product," as our hostess described it. Dessert and coffee still to come. In the end we left incredibly satisfied and somewhat feeling as if we had made new friends and were part of a unique family.
The amazing food was potatoes, spices apples, or should I say spiked apples, fried okra, dinner rolls, meatloaf, and fried chicken. Desert was a fudge pie and coffee. The whipped cream on the pie also had, "The Product," in it.
Overall the price we paid was nothing when compared to the experience, the food, and the feeling we got while we were there.
I highly recommend the experience of Miss Mary Bobo's. Should we go back, you better believe we will be...
Read moreMy husband and I were planning on visiting some friends in Kingsport and working on checking off some distilleries along the whiskey trail. We scheduled to go to Jack Daniel's and our friends told us we had to go to Miss Mary Bobo's. So I scheduled a lunch reservation for us.
We went in the off season on a weekday. We checked in a few minutes prior to our reservation. We were given a card the size of a business card with the dining room name on it and told the bell will ring when it is time to be seated. We explored the gift shop while we waited.
Promptly at 11am, the dinner bell was rung and people were escorted to their dining room by a host. Our host was Kevin.
We went in the Tolley room and were seated at a beautiful wood table with a lazy Susan in the center. The food was set out on the lazy Susan and we each had a glass of sweet tea. We were seated at a round table with the host, and 2 other parties whom we did not know.
Kevin explained the history of Miss Mary Bobo and the family dining tradition. The food is all you can eat. On the lazy Susan, there was a chicken pie dish (think pot pie minus the veggies) fried pork chops, fried okra, baked apples soaked in a jack Daniel's sauce, green beans, rolls, a corn salsa, mashed potatoes and some condiments. The food was delicious! The pork chops were the best restaurant pork chops I've ever had. For dessert we had a carrot cake with a cream cheese icing. The cake was also delicious.
I really enjoyed the table talk and history of the property. Kevin was an amazing host and we enjoyed his company. We also learned about the program they offer for the local community college students. We met 2 students who told us their education plans.
The restrooms are nice and clean. There is an elevator for thos who need it to get to the 2nd floor which is where you check in. The property itself is also beautiful and we went and saw the spring on the first floor. I will definitely make plans to return when we are back...
Read moreWe were there the week of Thanksgiving with a large party, several of whom were from out of town and really looking forward to the Miss Bobo's experience. We were also celebrating my grandmother's 102nd birthday. We have been several times before in years past and the food has always been homemade and amazing. This time the experience was bad from start to finish. I understand different protocols being in place due to COVID but we were herded into a small crowded gift shop where each person must complete their order card then stand in a long line where each person must pay beforehand, so I don't think COVID was a factor in the bad service and bad food we received. If you want a soft drink, you must pay for it there and then get a small bottled drink out of a cooler. No refills. We had pre-coordinated our reservation several times but when we finally got seated there was not enough space or chairs for our party. We received very little help in resolving it and had to borrow chairs from the room next door. This would have all been overlooked had the food been decent but it was terrible. Dressing was burned, turkey was extremely dry, fried okra was frozen. I don't think any of it was homemade. If it was, it wasn't good. When I say not good, I mean most of it was left on the plates. Miss Bobo's has always had amazing desserts but not this time. The buttermilk pie cost extra and it wasn't good either. For bread, they bought one very tiny roll for each person. Our bill for three people was almost $80. In years past the price would have been worth it but honestly, the food is way better at a Cracker Barrel. For some reason, Miss Bobo's has compromised on the quality of the food and the experience is no longer special. Save your time and money and just go to...
