Service has gone downhill!! We have dined frequently at Tokyo Sushi for the last few years. This place used to be one of our very favorite restaurants. But twice recently we have had the same male server who pays little attention to us or to the fine details. Tonight we had to ask twice to receive water -- and that was after food had already been served. We had to ask for silverware and chopsticks. I needed to inquire about my salad, which should have arrived before other food but did not. Server was sitting down and had completely forgotten about the salad. Also needed to ask twice for gluten free soy sauce. He never checked on us once our meal was dropped off to the table. Our water was not refilled. We had to ask for a box and the bill from a different server or we would probably still be sitting there.
The food is still very fresh and delicious; this review has no bearing on the kitchen staff. There used to be a different family running this establishment a year or so ago. At that time the service was consistently outstanding and the Sushi was plated with a higher level of artisticness. However, the focus of this review is the poor service. When you are spending good money on a meal and it the special thing you are choosing to do with your family for weekend fun, it is reasonable to expect a certain level of attentiveness from your server. As we were leaving, we asked another staff person who the manager was so we could discuss our experience, but it turned out our terrible server actually was...
Read moreThree things add up to a five star review..food, service and ambiance. Izumi checks the boxes for me. Walked in the door and was immediately greeted and taken to a clean and ready booth. This place is new so the dining area was comfortably laid out with plenty of spacing between customers. The booths give you a feeling of privacy and the noise is minimal. Within minutes we were approached by a friendly young waitress. We asked for hot tea, followed by miso soup and a small salad. I'd say we had it in three minutes. We then ordered crab rangoon, shrimp tempura and a godzilla roll. The rangoon came out as we took our last bite of salad. The rangoon was absolutely delicious, with a nice combination of creamy and crunch. Just as we were taking our last bites, out came our main courses. My gosh, the servings were prodigious! The presentation was very appealling to the eye. The food was not only delicious but beautiful. Just a bit of advice...if you're going to have appetizers like we did, you will struggle to finish your meal. We left packed to the gills. I have a feeling this restaurant is the rebirth of the Tokyo Sushi place that used to be on Washington street. If so, I am very glad to see them back. Bottom line, this is a very comfortable restaurant that serves delicious food with a good attitude. Definately a nice addition to downtown Manitowoc. If you're looking for sushi or Asian fusion food it would behoove you to patronize the Izumi restaurant. You're in...
Read moreIzumi was a feast of taste sensations. My wife and I enjoyed a sampler of different raw fish, chicken dumplings, chicken domburi, calamari tempura, and the salads and miso soup. Everything was super delicious, and the portions were more than generous. We have paid much more for less food and lesser quality in other places. The decor is wonderful, something different to see in every corner. One feels transported from Manitowoc for a while. I look forward to eating my way through their menu, as this was truly a pleasure to indulge a variety of tastes and textures. Our server, Softy, was exceptionally nice and gave us some good advice for newcomers to Japanese cuisine. You will be pleasantly surprised at this new gem...
