I was hoping that with Krusty's we'd get an above-and-beyond experience, but unfortunately it's a shiny package with little substance. Visually, Krusty's has the donut business on lock in the Mankato region. Flavorwise, they're far behind most.
QUALITY CONTROL: Buy ANY filled donut of theirs (there's only a few to choose from at any time) and you'll end up with a TINY amount of whatever off to one side of the roll. Roughly 70% of your donut will be dry. Additionally, their fillings are cheap and unimpressive. Want a glazed donut? I can't see the glaze people!
VARIETY: While they have a large selection of options, most are within the same realm. A standard holed donut with some sort of flavored decor. Forget croissants. Forget puff rolls, a real eclare, a nice longjohn, bearclaw, holes, fritters, twists, most cream varieties, and multiple fruits on the same day. Art is only a third of a donut. We need flavor and texture!
Am I glad to have a focused donut shop here? Of course. But it's not what it should be. While Hy-Vee has gone way downhill on quality and skyrocketed on price, and Kwik Trip's convenient chemical nightmare seems to be the go-to for many, the likes of Cub and Family Fresh may not be as pretty, but they're still leaps and bounds ahead on taste and texture. Take a hint from places like Daube's in Rochester, Wuollet's or Glam Dolls in Minneapolis: Flavor and quality...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreVery good donuts! The underbellies have a nice, evenly toasted texture that gave it a slight crunch that we all love in a good donut. Despite showing up at 1:00pm, they still tasted fresh and vibrant like they were just recently made.
Also, the jam filled donuts are pleasantly soft with an above-average filling. Overall, a great balance of flavor (not too sweet) and excellent mouthfeel for all the products. It was buy 2 get the 3rd free, which was an awesome deal!
I would say, however, that the store itself is a little dull. No music, which made it awkwardly quiet. I would give 5 stars if the place was a little happier, as a donut shop should be in my opinion. The main goal of making good donuts was...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreI'm so so disappointed in Krusty's. I placed an order on the 19th in store with a cashier for 3 dozen donuts for my son's daycare for the holidays to pick up today 12/30. Only to go and while the doors were unlocked the shop was clearly closed and we had no idea. No one called us so we could rearrange the scheduled day or find an alternative option for today. After calling Weggys we learned that it was decided on Sunday not to open at all this week. While I can understand that due to the holidays, I can't understand how no one let us know. It's just unacceptable and incredibly frustrating. Previously we had good experiences and really enjoyed the donuts but I don't expect to...
