This was our 3rd or 4th visit to Chokdee (although we haven't been there in a few months) & sadly, everything we ordered this time was really bad.
We moved out to a neighborhood just South of Manor a bit over a year ago & were excited to find we had a Thai restaurant with solid ratings just up the road, as Thai food is one of our absolute favorites - mine especially after having lived all across Thailand for about a year.
The chicken Tom Kha soup was so sweet it was almost inedible. The chicken satay had to be day old reheated chicken - it was the dryest, most tasteless, tough, filled with gristle, bad bad bad chicken I've ever had. And the peanut sauce that came with it was, again, so sweet that it was basically inedible. I ate half of one satay skewer & threw the rest sway.
The last hope I had was the Larb. This was one of my most favorite Thai dishes from my time living all over Thailand. And I've loved it everytime I used to get it at the Deedee food trailer down in South Austin. It's always been the dish I've used to evaluate how good a Thai restaurant is. I've probably had larb we'll over a hundred times & this was one of the worst attempts I've tried. Larb, when made authentically & well, is a finely minced meat salad with some large chunks of veggies on the side. Their "larb" looked like it was some attempt at a "deconstructed" dish...and plus the flavor was just not good nor did it taste like any good larb I've ever had at all. Plus the meat was fairly tough & chewy. I had 2 bites of this - took the 2nd praying the bad first bite wasn't the real experience - and sadly had to throw it all away like the chicken satay.
I'm not sure what changed at Chokdee, but I pray this was just a one-off very very bad day in the kitchen & not the new normal there.
If we ever eat there again & have a much better experience, I will gladly come back here & update my review.
Please Chokdee, you're our only Thai hope out here in/near Manor!
ps - the reason I gave it 2 stars instead of one is due to the kind service we've always had there. if my rating was based solely on the food,...
Read moreFriendly place in a strip mall and we loved the fried spring rolls. Served hot and crispy. I was not given a choice of rice upon ordering. I was fine receiving white rice but my husband was not. But that was what was given. That wasn’t a big deal though.
The big deal was that the food was prepared incorrectly which resulted in VERY watered down sauces.
All of them.
I don’t know if this was done to extend the sauce “for profit” or if they used too many frozen vegetables, which will thin down a proper sauce such as curry which should be made from a thick coconut milk, but my guess it was done to create a cheaper dish because even the thick dipping glaze (duck sauce) for the egg rolls was watery
The red curry I ordered with scallops poured on with zero richness or thickness and dank below the rice due to it being watered down so terribly so it simply should have been a soup eaten with a spoon.
My husband had the Pa Kra Pow with beef and shrimp and had the same issue.
I asked my friends their thoughts on the place in the event we had a bad night and needed to try something different, but all had similar experiences. I was told the noodle dishes were very dry so opposite issue there.
May be a long while before I give this a chance again. Watering down what should be a thick rich sauce rarely results in...
Read moreSo... after reading the reviews I was so excited to try this place. I must’ve gone on an “off day” for them because the Pad Thai I received is hands down the worst I’ve ever had. It literally has NO flavor and I requested medium spice and there was not an ounce of spice in this. I wish I had taken a picture but I got it to go and was hungry so I didn’t think to do it. It barely had any chicken or nuts, just a TON of noodles... which is fine and standard... but the ratio was not even close. I REALLY wanted to like it bc I love Pad Thai and preferred to go somewhere local since I’m in one of the new subdivisions out here. I’ll now probably have to drive South to get my “fix”. I added Franks’s Red Hot Chili Lime sauce and squeezed the lime they provided over it in order to make it taste... like something... but like I said... maybe this is not the norm. I gave them 2 stars because the Thai tea was phenomenal 😊 UPDATED REVIEW! So I tried this place again and it was SO EFFIN GOOD!!! I’m convinced I just caught them on and off day initially bc tonight...
