On a recent trip down to Manteno for work, a friend pointed me towards Maria's Kitchen, promising it would be worth the detour. They couldn't have been more right. Stepping into the place, I was hit with an atmosphere that felt immediately like home—a rare find when you're miles from Chicago.

Maria's Kitchen is delicious and affordable! I was passing through town to visit the nearby state park and found this local joint. The workers inside were very nice and the entire place was compliant with mask mandates and COVID safety. Unfortunately, they were out of the homemade tamales that sounded really good, but I'll be sure to swing by next time I'm around for those. I ordered a steak burrito, elote, and a pork torta, along with their horchata. Everything was delicious!

There were picnic tables outside and I felt comfortable and safe to eat outside (this is during COVID times). The worker was so kind and brought an umbrella to stick in the picnic table so it was shaded. He brought out the trays of food to us outside, as well. The service was so helpful and I had a wonderful afternoon.

Italian beef wasn't anything to write home about, not dipped enough very little beef, it is a Mexican restaurant so I'll try Mexican food next time. Update: the taco's.... All I can say is there's a place next door to a Chinese restaurant that is 10 times better on the same street just a block south, the thing is is they're sooooo nice at Maria's and I think that's why they get so many good reviews besides people out here are also used to bland food as well...Mexican and Mediterranean are my two favorite foods I've eaten them everywhere and I could pass on their tacos as well.
