When we first moved to town a year ago, we heard everyone say: "You've got to go to PJ's!" We couldn't figure out what the big deal was until we went. The quality of the ice cream cannot be beat. I never would have dreamed that a small town like Manteno could have an ice cream shop with such a HUGE selection of flavors. They even have great sugar-free flavors and gelato! They always have some new flavors to try that change seasonally.
It is a great place to have some of the most delicious coffee you can find anywhere and you can buy it ground or in whole beans to take home!
Bring the family and plan to stay awhile because there are board games to play together. Or let the kids sit at the checkers table while the adults have a chance to talk for a while.
Head there on Tuesday or Friday nights and join in a card game. Or, go there alone and enjoy reading one of the many books they have available. Take your laptop for some quiet time to work or play.
We have celebrated several family birthdays there and the owners could not have been more accommodating to meet our needs. Music groups sometimes come and bring entertainment in the evenings. It is always spotlessly clean. Jigsaw puzzles that customers have put together are hung around the room along with a bulletin board showcasing local people and events.
Owners Paula and Rick Shelton have created a haven in downtown Manteno. If you go there when they are not too busy, they will pull up a chair and get to know you. Whether you live near or far, it is worth the trip to PJ's. They don't take credit or debit cards so they can keep their prices lower but they take cash or local checks so bring the gang and try one of their Panther Pile Ups!
I am not related to the owners in any way. I am just a customer who is happy to give them a...
Read moreThe ice cream was good as usual, but customer service was rude. I've been going to PJ's for 2 years. I know they have a no pets policy but me and a group of friends were hanging out prior. So i had my snake with me, friendliest thing. So i sent my friends in to ask if i could come in with my snake because it was raining outside, they said no which was fine. So i didn't go in out of respect and waited under their awning for my friends to come out so i could hand over the snake and go in myself. But some dude came out and told me to step away from the building.... out in the rain. So i stepped away, and then(a manager i guess?) he persisted, "No, like away away," and he steped towards me threateningly. (Some stick up his but) so i waited in the rain. When my friends came back i went in and got my stuff, which was fine. And i usually tip generoulsy, but It's the last time i'll be eating at PJ's because they feel a need to have sort of bouncer over a small snake, that which by the way, some customers going in stopped and admired her.... oh well. So as far as Ice cream goes, yeah , fine. But i wouldn't support a rude company if i...
Read moreCame to PJs today and was turned down due to them serving a school only. The employees shook their heads at us as we had walked in when their lights were on and doors open They repeatedly pointed to the door and said we are closed over and over when we walked in without a greeting at all but to be fingers pointing at us. ive never recieved this rude behavior from their staff before. I didnt know it was a big deal to make 2 cones. Very wrongful of them to keep their doors unlocked to the public and not expect customers. We should have been served and asked to sit outside if they were closing up to the public as they were still cashing out orders. This visit may be my last. Trying to keep small businesses alive and supporting them just isnt enough anymore. Will not...
