I'd seen that Rae's Bar & Grill had gotten about five or six Local Best Awards for 2022, and the titles included Best Burgers, Best Fries, and Best Overall Bar Drinks, so one day, I believe it was a Saturday, I took my (elderly) mother with me to go check it out. Rae's Bar & Grill is a seat yourself establishment, but as we entered, every table was occupied, so we sat at the bar.
The atmosphere was lively, but not so loud that you couldn't hear each other. The bartender was very welcoming, and even helped us pick out drinks. Neither my mother nor I are big drinkers, and we prefer more fruity drinks. While the bartender did let us know that she didn't necessarily have any fruity drinks, she did give me some options when I asked her what she could make with the Malibu Rum. I got a drink called a Sunset, and it was very delicious, while my mom got a glass of red wine.
For food, we were informed that we could eat at the bar, and I ordered a Spicy Mac & Cheese Burger while my mother ordered the Big Chief Burger. "Best Burgers" is an understatement. Besides the delicious hamburger meat, I think what really sold the burgers for us was the sourdough buns. The seasoned fries were second to none, and both my mother and I found ourselves finishing our fries before we even touched the burgers. They're not shy with the portions, either, so by the end of it all, we were extremely full and satisfied. We would have stayed for cheesecake, but we had decided on dessert elsewhere that night.
Finally, there was a group of seven there that night celebrating a birthday, and when the live music arrived, the bartender and staff actually pushed some (now empty) tables together and created a dancing space for the group and other bar-goers to enjoy their celebrations and evening. The staff was also very helpful and inviting when my mom and I asked questions regarding some of the drinks they were mixing.
All in all, we both consider this outing to be one of our best, and we will definitely be coming back. And next time, we're...
Read moreWe have lived in Marble Falls for 15 years. Every couple of years we give the R-Bar another chance. Obviously some people like it because most of the reviews are good. We have always thought that the food was mediocre at best. Now, Marble Falls doesn't have a lot of restaurants so maybe people are grading on a curve
We had seen a Facebook post that said they had good Chicken Fried Steak. So, we wanted to give them another try. Three of us had the CFS and were all disappointed.
Here's a rundown: Food: Everything is over-seasoned. I'm not saying spicy because I like spicy. But just throwing flavors on things hoping for the best isn't going to work out. See details below: Service: super slow, but we were not in a hurry so it was OK for us.
Food Details Sweet Tea - WOW. Basically tea flavored syrup. And my family loves sweet tea. I actually had unsweet so we mixed mine and my daughter's together and it was still sickening sweet. Tea was never refilled so we just had to deal with it.
Chicken Fried Steak: Tough, really tough. My 16 YO daughter took the first bite and said, "it tastes cowy". We laughed and then I understood. The meat must of been seasoned or marinated in something that had a strong beef taste. It was like chewing on a beef bouillon cube. One of us were able to choke it down, the other two just passed.
Mashed Potatoes: I realize this is going to sound strange. But similar to the CFS, it had a very strong flavor. A strong potato flavor. Yes - I know this sounds silly. None of us ate them. I don't know what a raw potato tastes like, but my guess is it tastes like Mashed Potatoes at R-Bar. Oh, and mashed potatoes is not a good name. Chunky potatoes would be a better name.
Side Salad: Well, it's a simple salad. No issues.
Overall. The food was tough, over-seasoned, and just bad. If you normally eat at Golden Corral, then this place is probably a treat. Otherwise...
Read moreUnderwhelming is probably the best word to describe Rae's.
To drink we decided to try the crazy horse tini which is basically their take on a Mexican martini. The drink wasn't bad but it had some flavor of pepperoncini in it which was a bit tough to get past.
For an appetizer we started with some chips and queso... Which the menu made obnoxiously clear came with EITHER queso OR salsa... For $5.60. That's a ridiculous price for chips and salsa which is typically complementary at pretty much every other "Tex Mex" restaurant.
So I asked if I order it with queso, how much extra to add the salsa add well. The server says "a couple bucks". Okay, go ahead and add the salsa too.
The queso and salsa were alright but not really worth paying extra for. And to add insult to injury: when the bill came they charged me $11.50 total for "combo queso and salsa". You have to be freaking kidding me. My entree was less than this chips and dip appetizer.
For my entree I ordered the pulled pork enchiladas. Imagine my surprise when they were served with a knife... What is this for? Well I figured it out: they are too tough to cut with just a fork. I've never needed a knife to eat enchiladas before but I guess there's a first time for everything.
I probably wouldn't have written a review. But charging me nearly $12 for "chips and dip", especially after the server lied about it only being "a couple bucks extra" to add salsa, something that is a free add on literally anywhere else,...
