My best friend treated me and my cousin to lunch today and we were so excited to get some authentic Trini rotis as we all are Caribbean and it’s difficult to get delicious Caribbean food in Atlanta. This will be a true review of our experience.
Atmosphere: Parking is limited but the establishment is also small so that is to be expected. Plus, parking is free. When we walked inside our noses were blessed with the aroma of moth balls! I couldn’t figure out what the smell was, but it was quickly clarified by my cousin and bestie! There is limited seating inside and it was packed for the lunch crowd.
Service: We were pleasantly greeted when we arrived. Provided menus to review and had our questions about the menu answered respectfully. No issues with service.
Now to the food by what we each ordered.
Shrimp roti: I have never had cinnamon in my roti before. It was very different but not in a good way. My roti was okay. The potatoes and chickpeas were bland. I had potato skin in my roti which also was different as well and is not very appetizing. My roti skin was cold, dry and burnt… The shrimp was the only part of the roti cooked well and had flavor. (Buss up shut)
Oxtail roti: Overpriced. There were only two pieces of extra bland oxtails in a whole heap of extra bland sauce for $20. The oxtails tasted like a watered down version of good oxtails. It’s our fault for ordering because we know that Trinis aren’t known for oxtails. We will leave that to the Jamaicans. (Buss up shut) it’s like a Jamaican a roti. Just as bad. Stay in your Caribbean lane.
Boneless chicken roti: There was a lot of chicken in the roti, but the taste was different (again not in a good way). I recommend removing the cinnamon from the recipe! Biting into a roti and potato skin being caught on your lip ruined the entire meal! It literally had to be spit out. The roti skin was dry for a dhalpuri roti!
Current slice: Delicious! That’s it! Nana cooked that!
Drinks: You can get authentic bottled drinks. We didn’t order the homemade sorrel and mauby. Order at your own risk.
Buffet: We didn’t order the buffet because the food looked sad. The macaroni looked very dry and crunchy and the rice did as well.
We will not be ordering from this restaurant again! I have no idea how this restaurant has 4.6 stars....
Read moreAbsolutely no way people who eat here know what authentic West Indian/Trini food taste like because this is the second time I’ve come here hoping to give this place a chance and it’s clear nobody in the south knows what seasoning and spices are. I drove over 30 minutes here many hours prior to closing to be in a sweltering restaurant (is this even legal for food storage?) where nobody looked like they wanted to serve you. I don’t need smiles, I’m not friendly either but good grief. Nothing is cheap and I came here ready to spend a lot of money for specific dishes hard to find anywhere else. Roti skins? Unavailable. Doubles? Unavailable. Pholorie? Unavailable. Good grief- any respectable restaurant in NYC is selling these items well into 10pm. Anyways, I ordered the items they actually did have- oxtail meal, mauby, currant roll, and roti (shrimp and veggie). Literally every items should be recooked- did someone in the kitchen forget to put perhaps salt, shadon benny, scotch bonnet, literally ANYTHING for flavor? The roti potato & channa included the skin for the potato as well 🙄 Complete waste of my money where even the macaroni pie was void of a cheesy flavor. The Mauby was sugarless and akin to brown water. I forced myself to eat and serve this to my family because I was embarrassed of how far I drove to give them this meal. Third time is the charm they say but I won’t be even entertaining another time with them. If this place is is operating on celebrity/influencer drop ins and word of mouth of the past decade I’ve realized there’s a extreme dearth of West Indian cuisine in Atlanta and will be looking into opening my own restaurant in the near future- I know my family...
Read moreI've gone here 3 times. The 1st two times they were delish. I got the oxtail & curry chicken roti. Loved the atmosphere & the service - plus they gave lots of food! The third & last time I went there was a new guy (not sure if he's replacing the guy that is usually there) & he was not as friendly & he brought us out half of the food we usually get. The whole set up was just different, but we thought okay no biggie. I ordered buss up shot and noticed no steam was coming from any of our plates. I stuck my fingers in the food and the food was a little cooler than room temperature. So I waited until the guy came back around and asked him if I could just get a roti his response to me as he picked up my plate was "so what do I do with this ?" & his body language & attitude was not something a paying customer should see (esp since I ate none of the food I gave back). I didn't want to embarrass my friends so I said the chicken is cold and I don't want the buss up shot so if you could heat up the chicken and wrap it up , great! Now that was totally my fault. Being jamaican I know you should not mess with curry. The curry was cold as if it wasn't even sitting on a low fire but not cold enough to where you know it was refrigerated, then microwaved... so from the start it wasn't a good idea. Long story short me and my friends allllll had food poisoning the next day. & 2 of us were in the ER all day. So not just because of the poisoning, but because to me that new guy didn't give us the usual vibe we get, I will not be returning to Tassa's. I give 3 stars because previous...
