I gave the store a 5, even if it isn't a full on 5/5, it's excellent and more than definitely higher than 4.5/5. I am not italian, but I eat a lot of pizza, and form many places, and different cities. So I have a versatile taste and appreciation for pizza and different types such as the deep dish form Chicago as well as Deninos in staten island. Pizzeria pizza is always my favorite type and chicago's Lou Malnati's and Giordano's deep dish is a very close second. Sorry for the intro
Grandma pizza 5/5 somehow they made it even better than their brother store Pizza pasta factory. Infact its better than the next ten stores nearby. Krispy's pizza from Old bridge, being a close second, when it comes to grandma slices; since they use water directly from Brooklyn, Kripy's has a unique taste. At Red tomato the San marzano fresh tomato sauce is finger licking good, and the crust is something of magic, this, to me, is what makes it better than everything else. Its simply perfect, and must have taken years if not decades to develop. **A+, 98/99%% at red tomato, firm A, 95% rating at pizza pasta factory, 95%, A rating at Krispys.
Cheese slice a classic, and the sauce they use is more than fresh, and the crust is excellent as well. Cheese slices are the base of a good pizzeria. They aren't the best I have ever had but they are really good, crispy, crunchy, doesn't hurt or bloat my stomach. Certain pizza places use lesser quality dough, or yeast, or a combination of the two, but I assure you Red tomato uses the highest ingredients. The mozzarella cheese they use is special also, I believe they use a certain kind from a certain vendor, there is a sign on the counter saying the name. Well the cheese is phenomenal, it doesn't have that plasticy feel certain cheese pizza's have when the cheese becomes cooked on fresh sauce. It isn't super chewy, for a lack of a better word. Its a properly made mozzarella cheese. The man behind the counter was nice enough to add the garlic knot seasoning, garlic and oil mix to my cheese slice and it tasted out of this world.
Vodka slices here are good, they aren't great. Vodka slice's being my favorite, especially pene-vodka or regular vodka slice. The sauce is missing something, I understand taste is subjective but it's missing something. I like my vodka slices creamy and sweet, and though the slice has both it's just not the right amount/ratio. It's still very good, better than most places but not the best. The grandma crust, vodka slice is a nice rendition of the vodka slice. Cucina alessi next to Wegmans in manalapan is the king of Vodka slices in my opinion.
Update: they modified the recipe and the vodka is 97%!
The white cheese slice is phenomenal, great combination of ricotta and mozzarella, these slices can be hit or miss depending on how cheap of a ricotta is used. The slice is crunchy is doesn't sag over with the extra weight, which is what i like. I don't like it when things slide off of my pizza.
As you can see, whatever you order from this establishment will most definitely be held up to a higher standard of taste and quality. You will be more than happy. no one paid me to write anything, but I have been meaning to write a review, because boy, that Grandma pizza is near legendary in taste. It's not even super duper expensive like marlboro pizza, which sad to say, has been declining in quality. I used to go as a kid, i am 23, and haven't step foot in Marlboro pizza since July. Pizza Pasta is way better ( back when Red tomato didn't exist). Second the staff is friendly, and they accommodate all requests. Lastly, the Owner works there and it shows you he takes pride in his work and it shows in the food, it truly does; everyone who steps in should always try the grandma slice.
This is why I ranked it a 5/5. It doesn't get much better folks. Thank you for reading this far, chances are, you are pizza addict if you...
Read moreRemoved 1 star because their prices online for pickup are cheaper and they don't know the difference between fresh and bottled jalapenos. This 1 star also signifies that they only use bottled jalapenos instead of a fresh option.
I am tempted to remove a second star because they charge 70% of the full pizza topping even for half side only but I won't because the Grandma pizza is that good here.
Now to the food, I ordered a Grandma Pizza with ½ base using their vodka sauce with crushed red pepper premixed into it prior to baking.
I topped the Grandma with mushrooms and vodka with jalapenos and pineapples. Toppings were quite adequate but expensive at $2.50 each on half pie so you're better off getting full pie toppings for maximum bang for the buck.
The pizza was absolutely fantastic...even after getting it home in a 10 minute drive. The pizza had a healthy layer of sauce and tomatoes - something I'm quite wary of otherwise they get quite dry.
The pizza sauce for the Grandma slice is just so flavorful! It has good body supported by a pizza base that has solid 'biscuity' (think British not gravy) crunch in each bite.
This will be my go-to pizza for pick-up in the region when I need a Grandma pie and the regular pizza will be Round Pie in Matawan.
The regular rounds pies including the margherita pizza are just okay IMO. I could taste neither the sauce nor the...
Read moreThis is a go to place for my family for a great variety of slices, or a simple large pie (with a salad). Their garlic knots and garlic bread(with cheese) are delicious, too. The service is always terrific, even when they are helping numerous customers, and the same is true when you call. The group at Red Tomato are always super nice…and patient…when you’re having a tough time deciding on what specialty slices you want to pick up (or your 11 year old is bit extra indecisive because there are so many awesome options!). Some favorites in our house—-grandma with vodka, chicken Caesar salad slice, buffalo chicken, chicken with spinach and red peppers (specialty slice), mushroom (the fancy slice, might be Portobello mushrooms) and good old plain or Sicilian. Their stuffed rolls are also delicious—-the sausage with peppers in my favorite!! Check them out, you won’t be...
