Funky Murphys (Marlboro) — Restaurant in Marlborough

I just left Funky Murphy's and the only thing funky about this place was the food. I had only an hour to grab a bite to eat which I thought would be ample time with it being 7:00 pm on a Wednesday. First off, it took almost 15 minutes to be greeted which I thought was odd considering the bar was 3/4 empty and there were only a few tables on the floor. I figured the 4 servers/bartenders should've been able to handle it. By the time the food came I had maybe 10 minutes to eat, which is fine, I asked for the check and paid before I even had a bite. I should've been weary of my dad's suggestion being that he has been smoking and drinking for almost 4 decades. His tastes buds have definitely been singed off. He's vegetarian and order the hummus platter. They served him a chicken hummus sandwich, that thankfully he took a second glance at before taking a bite. My "medium rare" steak tips were a variety of temperatures ranging from medium to well-done, and to top it off the flavor was like how I imagine a pickled hotdog would taste. When I signaled the waiter to come over, he took my dad's food before I could tell him about mine. Because of the time crunch he had to take his food to go. I didn't even ask for my money back because I figured this place needed it more than I did. With prices reflecting an economy from 2013, I shouldn't have expected much. I’ve been going here for drinks for a few years now. Last night they decided not to take my ID because it was NYE and my ID is out of state. My server told me I had to be over 25 with an out of state ID in order to be served. I was a little upset because I go there quite a lot so I decided to go to the bar and speak to the manager. I asked him if they were able to take my ID because I’m 25 and he said he could as long as I had something else with my name on it, like a credit card. I handed him my ID and credit card and after he looked at it for a while he noticed it was a learner’s permit and said it wasn’t ID. I told him it was a valid ID because a VA learner’s permit is, but he told me he couldn’t take it because it was MA law. I just took my cards back from him and walked back to my table shaking my head no to let my friend know that I couldn’t get a drink. I sat back down in the booth waiting for the server to come back so I could order another soda, but instead the bouncer comes over and tells me the manager said I had to leave. I think it’s absolutely ridiculous that the manager kicked me out for no reason! And that he wouldn’t accept my ID after I’ve been using it there for years and have never had a problem before. This place literally accepts fake IDs every weekend but kicked me out because I had an out of state ID and was just going to continue to drink a soda....

Really wanted to make this place my home this fall for NFL Sundays but I can see why this place was a quarter full for the first NFL Sunday of the year. They advertise their Sunday Ticket and ability to catch all of the NFL action on their 9 60” TVs and 135” projector. This was unfortunately not the case as 7 of their 10 TVs are mandatory Patriots viewing according to the server. This leaves 3 TVs for out of market games and RedZone at a first come first served basis. Unfortunately two of these remaining TVs are connected which means that Funky Murphys is only capable of showing 2 out of market games or 1 out of market game and RedZone in addition to the 7 TVs tuned to the Patriots. On this Sunday we were locked into no RedZone and 2/8 other NFL games. NFL Sunday Ticket bars and restaurants can be fun and usually they are. This is unfortunately not one of them. Can’t comment on the food, only had a few beers before kickoff and left when we realized we would be unable to follow most of the action around the league. Probably a fun place if you only want to watch the Pats but there’s plenty of other good Pats bars in the area. Steer clear of this place if you’re trying to have a...
