My family and I dined at the Grill at Fairview Inn this past Sunday.
We really enjoyed the location and ambience. The food was very tasty (although my husband did order a filet medium well and it came out rare. He had to wait 25 minutes until the steak came back cooked properly.). Aside from that hiccup, the food was great!
Our waitress was very sweet. She was one of only two women waiting tables in the entire restaurant, and I felt really bad for both of them. Lots of empty tables remained with dirty dishes on them for the entirety of the night, and a table of two elderly women sitting next to us waited well over 35 minutes for someone to come by and bring their check so that they could leave. I am guessing perhaps some waitstaff called out sick or otherwise didn't show up that day, which is unfortunate. Despite the lack of support, these two waitresses were kind, friendly and hardworking. Kudos to them!
Unfortunately, we did have a very unpleasant experience involving the bartender who was working that day, whom I was told is named Carolyn.
My husband and I ordered an after-dinner drink. Our server took our order with a smile and went over to the bartender to place it. (Our table was right next to the bar).
Out of the blue, we hear Carolyn, in a loud voice, say to the server "What?? In this drink , the want to use spiced rum instead of vodka???! EWWWW ...YUCK!!!!" with a disgusted look on her face. We were shocked. She shook her head and begrudgingly went over to make our drink, which she was very vocal about disapproving of.
My husband and I couldn't believe her behavior. Never in our entire lives have we been treated this way by a bartender who didn't approve of our drink preference. It was so rude and completely unprofessional for her to loudly proclaim her disgust at our order. Everyone around her could hear her, and it left us feeling embarrassed.
The bartender's role is to take an order and make it, all the while being professional. She is not supposed to vocalize her disdain for or disgust of someone's drink preference.
I truly hope Carolyn was having an 'off' day and that this isn't a pattern of behavior for her.
We were surprised when we received our bill that not one item was credited as a courtesy given the fact my husband's steak was severely undercooked and he had to wait another 25 minutes to get back cooked appropriately, and also given the fact we just overheard the bartender loudly proclaiming how disgusting our drink order was. Most restaurants comp a minor item (even something as small as an ice cream or one drink) as a way to apologize or make amends for the restaurant's error or staff behavior, but in this case, it didn't happen.
We really liked the food and the location, and we may be back someday to give it another try; however, if and when we do, we hope that Carolyn will not be working as we really don't want to be subjected to her rude...
Read moreI often spend most of my summer just down the street from here. So I take that opportunity to walk to enjoy a great meal quite often.
The food here is pretty high end-especially at their price points. Portions are good and satisfy my 6'2 325 lb self, often providing another meal from my leftovers.
Service is usually good. You can sit outside on the deck facing the ocean when weather is amenable.
Two dishes to not be missed are the beer braised shortribs and the pork chop. The short ribs are superb, the best i've ever had anywhere. Tender pot roast like it pulls apart and is so so delicious. Sometimes I'll have their porch chop. I don't know if they cook it in a sous vide or what-but it has tremendous flavor with some light spices adding aroma and flavor, but what is most remarkable is how juicy and tender it is. It is amazing and a real value too at around 17.00 at this time. I often scurry over to have this for a nice lunch and it's a thick large chop so I end up with a 2nd meal usually unless I'm really hungry.
In the many times I've eaten there I've only had a problem one time. The pork chop I was served was unusually sized-very large but quite thin, unlike their normal one. That was no problem-as the amount of meat was sufficient. But it seemed to have 6x the salt it normally had and it was not possible to eat it. This day also was the only day I had poor service, so the server took our order and we didn't see her again until 30 minutes later or we would have brought it up and had something different. But we shared the other dinner our party of two had and I sent the original one back at the end when we finally flagged our server down for the check. We had only eaten one bite. I was really surprised after explaining things to the server and showing her we hadn't eaten it that our bill didn't reflect any adjustment. SO I went to the hostess and requested the manager who came quickly. I explained and she quickly apologized and took the entire meal off our menu. We also told her of our servers total neglect. She promised she would look into that and I know she would. Every business will have an occassional issue. It's inevitable based on volume and time. BUT it's how that business handles a problem. The manager quickly tackled it and said she was looking into what happened so it would not repeat for us or any other customer.
So I highly recommend here. They also have daily specials for dinner that are created based on what is in season, or just for creative unusual things. The other week I had the grilled octopus they offerred-and man was it good. Extemely tender still but a nice char with it being buttered and grilled on a super hot grill-it was extaordinary and wonderful.
Enjoy this place-for the type/quality of food it is a very good value, not over priced like ones in busier locations locally. And the food is...
Read moreMy three sisters and I got together for dinner on Thursday, 9/1 at The Grill at Fairview. We have all been there on several occasions and although the menu is limited, the food has always been really good and consistent. Three of us ordered the Short Ribs (my favorite) and one ordered the Sirloin (med-rare). When the food arrived, it was served by someone other than our server and immediately, I noticed that it was not what I usually order. There was absolutely no Bordelaise sauce on the ribs; they were not even browned and whatever juice was in the dish, was clear and watery. The mashed potatoes are usually creamy and melt in your mouth, but what we got was an ice cream scoop of hard mashed potatoes. The spinach was the only thing on the plate that was recognizable from the several other times that I've ordered the dish. My sister's sirloin was med-well at best with one third of it so charred, it was not palatable. So DISAPPOINTING all around. Meanwhile, our server was waiting on a large party of about 15 people who were seated after we ordered (as well as other parties). I know that places are short staffed and we have to be patient, but by the time she came over to check on us, it was too late. I barely ate any of my dinner. My sister told the server, when she finally came over, that the steak was overcooked - I mean there was barely any pink even in the thickest part - and we were not happy at all with the ribs. She apologized and said that Arty was not the chef tonight. We ordered one dessert to split which the server took off our bill to make up for our bad experience. Love getting together with my sisters, which is not often since was don't all live in the same state, and while we enjoyed each other's company, the meal was a...
